The HiFi thread

Evatco, good. Auspost, slow.
Going for almost full recomponent of the valve amp
The 33uf/33uf cap is convenient but spendy..

After a bit of advice - I have a Marantz NR1606 receiver, probably about 10 years old now and it has already been serviced to have some components replaced after it stopped working (about 4 years ago). It has recently stopped working again - wont 'talk' to the TV through the ARC HDMI cable and when it is connected to spotify/bluetooth through the phone, it wont actually play the music through the speakers. Has anyone else had issues with Marantz? Is it worth getting serviced again (probably $300+) or put that money towards a new unit? What is the go to for a simple receiver that can watch TV/movies as well as stream music. The speakers I have are just bookshelf speakers/centre/sub - so not 5.1/7.2

Definitely new unit. They only have a design life of 5 years so something else will go in the not too distant future.

Denon/Marantz are the market leaders so just get another one of them based on your power needs. Preferably with Audyssey to simplify speaker setup and levels.

Have to agree with this. You can take the opportunity to future proof should you wish to go the full home theatre thing. Understand if you just want to run a stereo as this is what I do. Occasionally watching a movie I will run the audio out through the stereo but usually nothing is worth that trouble. We are not great TV or movie watchers though.

I have all Yamaha gear. I prefer it to Denon.

Yamaha are good too, but I think Audyssey is a better algorithm than Yamaha's YPAO. I've got a Yamaha AX 5100 surround pre amp which I love and it has the top of the range YPAO, so it's not what you would get in the mid spec space.

Dirac Live is a better algorithm again and is available on mid to upper spec Denons with a license fee and come standard on mid to upper spec Pioneer/Onkyos.

Pioneer/Onkyos have had a patchy record over the last 20 years. The current gen stuff seems to be good, but the previous gen had an awful reputation for being under engineered and high failure rates.

But be warned! It's not all about the algorithm. Denon's have historically ruled the roost for the sound quality of their DACs, even overshadowing their Marantz brethren. This began about 10 years ago with the AVR-8500H flagship, but this has now been surpassed by some lower models and is now even matched by the AVR-3800H. Some top end Yamaha, NADs, Anthem's have been tested as being as good.

You and me both...

1975, every single 0.8-1mm steel component leg looped through and around a steel tab through-hole, with higher temp solder... almost no copper anywhere

If i had time and it was worth something would fab up a PCB, but this is just to prevent siblings burning down mums house :p

50 year old wax caps, the big electro looks sus.

It's alive!

and it can use MP3/phone headphone output (cranked up) through the mic/tape input...
speaker cones are mint and sound mellow and warm

I took this advice and gave the family (really me) an early Christmas present - I got a Marantz Cinema 60. So far, it is a lot more user friendly and arguably a better sound than the old NR1606. Now just need to figure out what to do with the old one - Ewaste? Or is there a market for old units?

stumbled across this site (while looking for good value monitors)..
measurements + mods for many headphones..

Jesus Christ! What an amazing rabbit hole.

I was recommended AKG K371s by a recording engineer and they have been great. Backed up by the data from that site. https://diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/measurements/akg/k371/

I really like the AKGs for my PC but for dedicated music listening there are some IEMs that blow them away and cost peanuts. I.e. the Thruthear Crinacle Zero Red and Blue https://www.audiosciencereview.com/...thear-x-crinacle-zero-blue2-iem-review.62096/

has been useful to help cut through the noise of online opinions, particularly for popular ones like AKG K240, MDR-7506, ATH-M40X..

Thanks! the 371s tick a lot of my boxes. and for $240..... the BT looks inneresting, but reviews may have legfit gripes...

Amazing how varied the reviews are for it (non-BT).. from brilliant.. to absolute junk 🤣
(some saying the k371 is bass-boosted and sibiliant, compared to DT770 .. no...)

their diagram to describe stuff was also really helpful

I both get and don’t get the obsession with measurements when it comes to audio gear.

I’ve got Grados on at the moment and enjoying that they don’t measure that great but make so much of the metal etc I listen to really sound engaging - adds their own flavour to the soundstage and distortion going on.

DT250s are closest I’ve got to a neutral headphone and I like them for clean production like electronic music etc.

Stuck my nose into the specialist hifi shop in Hobart to ask for who their repairer is for old gear - my NAD 3020 really needs a proper service and probably recapping.

Snobby wanker just looked at me as if he'd just scraped me off his shoes and asked why id want to do that... That was my cue to leave.

The overwhelming majority of "reviewers" are just wannabe influencers, paid/biased or not. Every opinion has an arsehole, and every arsehole has differently built ears and sponsorships

Measurements are reproducible data. Real information.
You still need to work out what spectrum works for your specific ears and taste, but then is much easier to shortlist which ones to try.
