The HiFi thread

The overwhelming majority of "reviewers" are just wannabe influencers, paid/biased or not. Every opinion has an arsehole, and every arsehole has differently built ears and sponsorships

Measurements are reproducible data. Real information.
You still need to work out what spectrum works for your specific ears and taste, but then is much easier to shortlist which ones to try.
Also, if you go for neutral measuring equipment it's much easier to get the sound you want with eq settings.

I personally just want to get the sound that the artists and producers intended.

The scientist in me likes measurements and data, but it becomes really subjective once the sound waves are hitting and interpreted by biological organs.

Good reproduction is still good reproduction, and I appreciate a producer laying out a track with clarity and finesse. Also appreciate the engineers who can design and build audio electronics with those little signatures that can highlight certain parts in the music.

Also audiosciencereview trashed my amp, which I love…

Stuck my nose into the specialist hifi shop in Hobart to ask for who their repairer is for old gear - my NAD 3020 really needs a proper service and probably recapping.

Snobby wanker just looked at me as if he'd just scraped me off his shoes and asked why id want to do that... That was my cue to leave.
Just stuck your nose in? There’s a shop down the road here which is so elitist it’s by appointment only ffs

Today I replaced my circa 1999 pre HDMI Denon Avr2800 with

A Denon AvrX2800H

(Now with HDMI)
Ooh it comes with a rocket !!!

I've actually had a repair technician say the same thing. Which is why I fixed it myself. And that was two decades ago. It's the shed amp now.

So after a bit of faffing around I think I have my new avr close to how I want it. A couple of points

- my wife’s expectation regarding how long things should take is in no way tied to having ever done that thing or any clue as to how the thing is done

- old components can have trouble talking to new components ie my ancient denon 2910 cd/dvd/sacd player won’t automatically talk to my avr (hdmi 1.1 to hdmi 2.2). Fortunately this can be resolved by forcing the avr to accept them imperialistic settings of the old gear

- no 5 channel rca inputs so no more sacds:( but I couldn’t justify the price hike so I can listen to the few titles I have (Floyd, Beck, Dire Straits). Maybe one day.

- Audessy is kind of pointless IMO, if I have to manually set the system up to get 2.1 what’s the point of Audessy ? I also don’t agree with the distances so I tweak them. Speaker size has to be changed for the sub to work and the crossover manually set. This is all stuff I would have done in the old days so no biggie but still.

- the new avr does sound epic though, especially with the 20% discount on the price. I wonder I should have gone to the 3800 for more powa but really that was probs overkill and I had to draw the line somewhere. It’s great to hear my speakers sing again.

- I haven’t done the streaming thing yet, gotta set up an account. Maybe on the weekend.

Are you sure you didn't just milk the silent period? ;)

I haven't used Audessy but I've used Anthem's equivalent. You also still need to set the speaker layout and distances even though it can estimate them. The point is to compensate for your room but I'm not sure how discernable that is.

I didn't have to set the crossover on mine, just had to make sure the sub itself was set to the right level.

Apparently with my sub (velodyne) I’m supposed to calibrate it first with its own microphone and then use Audessy. I don’t have the mic, I guess I’ll play with Audessy again now the sub is active and see what happens
