So do stores actually let you take home and try amps? Like I said it's hard to compare.

Also is it possible that the amps are different classes? No idea here, I assume all consumer stuff was class d. This is only based on my. Limited experience with car audio though.

If you drop $100k on a system they will, for the end of the market you and I live it is unlikely, can't hurt to ask. It would be easier to drag your speakers around or just speak to somebody at the place you bought it for their recommendations or even B&W forums?

The HK is Class D and is probably the only one, it is the one I would be interested in listening to most compared to the Cambridge.

Absolutely,

I had a mate who twice held parties at my place with my hifi; the proviso was he did exactly this, my kit had some very nice upgrades.. I still recall the old Plinius SA-100 cranking all night in Class A, got a bit toasty!

So.. my name is Dan & I'm a hi-fi addict...

My SNA signature:

Sources: Garrard 301 / Soundsmith DL103-R -> Nighthawk, PC (JPLAY) -> Bladelius USB DAC, Squeezebox Classic -> Keces DA-131 DAC Amplification: Primare i30. Speakers: DIY Audax/Visaton floor standers.

Time for some hi-fi porn pics:

You'll mostly prefer the b-side to this as it's the Playboy topless pic, will have to take another..

I like my DIY, bought my speakers off another SNAer with only half the x-over components, I upgraded a few of the caps/coils/resistors and rebuilt these bad boys (those coils are about 3kg each):

The current room, TV blew up so I now have an Aldi 4k 48" (the Samsung was 51 I think).. yellow speakers found another couple of homes around the capital & (most importantly) the big sofa on the side has gone so the speakers are out from the rear wall at least another foot with nothing in front of them, awesome mod.

Good to see coils orientated so they don't magnetically couple.

Another pretty disc I particularly like spinning leading up to a ride.. luckily I have it in FLAC format as well for mobile cranking:

My setup I use for home audio is shared with the TV, etc.

Unfortunately with a kid running around it doesn't get the hammering it used to :)

Onkyo 1009 receiver
Behringer EP4000 for the sub (bridged)
Focal 826v front speakers (love these!)
RE Audio XXX 15" in a coffee table box (32mm MDF base with bracing that flexes significantly!)

Unfortunately the room is setup for the comfort of the family, not sound, so I do use the audyssey on the receiver, which works really really well to correct the room.

Once we eventually build a new house, the media room will suit this stereo!

A classic amp and perfect example as to why a single focus on power is fraught.

Massive current capacity meant it can easily drive difficult speaker loads and belied it's humble 20 wpc (genuine both channels driven) with some high efficiency speakers (for stereo) while producing a nice balanced (erring toward warm) sound.

On that basis I'll be cheeky and say I like your taste in stereo better than cars ;)

EDIT: can, not could

Philistine :hand:

This little setup cost about 800 bucks (but got very lucky on eBay with the amp, not many in as good a condition as mine!) and whilst would struggle in a big room sounds wonderful. Its essentially a computer speaker setup, do most of my listening in the spare room when on the computer. In my old age I have learnt that quality trumps quantity in most things. I heartily recommend the Usher S520 if anyone is looking for a bookshelf - they are super nice and amazing bang for the $500.

In the lounge I have a 20 year old Kenwood amp and a pair of Goodman floor standing. They're ok but they are better suited to a home theatre role being fed from the AppleTV (never did get around to a sub or rear speakers, which probably just betrays my tendency to get bored by "blockbuster" movies...).

Must get around to buying some of these - only been meaning to for 20 years or so... Magic sounding speakers. http://www.orpheusaudio.com.au/products/aurora-2-and-3.html

Dug out my records and having major itch to play them all again. Trouble is I got rid of my turntable, amp and speakers a few years back when I moved OS.

Forgot how addictive this gear is... just wanted to find a cheap setup on gumtree to get started, and now I've fallen into that deepest of internet holes reading reviews of current components.

Just want something simple too - couple of nice bookshelves and a modest amp to run a turntable. Now I'm drooling over Rega, Rotel and Krix products.

I've been doing the same for the last couple of weeks to pimp out my old cars audio system. Was a huge relief to throw a few things in a cart, still need one more thing though, back to researching.....

Turntable is ordinary; Technics 1200 will be this year's tax return indulgence. Rest of the gear (Yamaha amp and cd player) is good stuff, speakers do the job more than adequately. Must admit I haven't played a CD in years; the only time they come out of the sleeves is when I'm importing them into itunes for my phone. Buy vinyl regularly (as can be seen) and gotta say it pisses me off when, on the odd occasion that I buy a platter from JB, some hipster doofus says "Yeah bro vinyls are back man"......!!!!!

Most nights I get out in the garage and spin a record or two. The whole process of sorting through and selecting a platter to play is somewhat soothing! Unlike electronic formats of music, with records you're more likely to listen to the whole disc (or at least a whole side) and in doing so more likely to rediscover tunes that you haven't heard for years.

NB: I've been storing 7" singles in that Giro Hammerhead helmet box since '93!

I helped a mate go through a mid life crisis with 1200 mk2's. I reckon there is much better value in a belt drive pro-ject table

I had 1200s when I was going through a DJ phase. Nice turntables and I wish I had hung on to them since they stopped making them in 2010, but oh well. But now that I'm looking to replace, the Rega and Pro-Ject offerings seem much better options.

Looking for help on speaker cable choice.

I am renovating my joint atm & have a space set up for my amp etc, with a picture of where speakers will go on an adjoining wall. This will require a run of ~10/5m & want to do this under the new floor.

I seem to be going round in circles trying to find info on the net so thought I'd throw it out there as there seems to be some people who know their shit around here. I have been looking at Chord Clearway & QED xt40 but have had great results with Audioquest interconnects. Anyone with opinions on speaker cable? Should I spend more to achieve a better result, given how permanent the install is? I have pretty much given up on bi-wiring, maybe I shouldn't?

Nothing fancy but I do try to really listen to music. Definitely 2 channel set up. NAD hybrid digital amp into B&W 684, currently using Kimber cables.
