I still swear by the smallest cog on the cassette and cutting the chain at the length where the tension just starts to pull on the lower arm of the derailleur method.

First I hear of this method!

Don't forget to make sure the chain length works through the range of the travel.

^^^ That's why the small sprocket (and small ring for 2x/3x) method is the best. It gives the longest possible chain length without slack, covers the whole gear range and has a bit in reserve for suspension travel - most suspension geometries have some degree of rearward axle path through the travel.

It wasn't great but then this new batch of wet belt engines is abject stupidity.

Shimano 12 speed derailleur stopped working properly today. 45 minute walk home. It kept getting stuck in the position shown in the photo. Clutch clean up and lube? Of course the chain goes completely slack. Any hints on fix would be appreciated. I have a spare I will put on for now.

Yep, clean up and lube fixed that for me.

Can't remember how long it took to get to that point though

Go a Shimano one instead. They always lasted longer, even the cheaper end.
