Single Speed Nationals

Big thanks to VW Nut for posting this up already!

warren BW.jpg

It's less than 6 weeks away, get on line, rego and spread the word.

https://www.registernow.com.au/mtba/ERegister.aspx?E=2761

There's some great rumors on here, we'll spread some more in the next couple of weeks.

And yes, we won the rights to host the worlds, we'd talked about it drunk one night but honestly didn't think we stood a chance. rocked up to the worlds with no plan or shebang, up against Belgium, Bend Oregon and South Africa who had, shirts, posters, slogans and loud voices; we just had a couple of beers and had a crack.
chopsticks, cream buns and beers followed a bunny hop comp and we had qualified. Shit didn't expect that, so we drank sake.
After the race there was a sort of soccer game decider, where we had to straddle our bikes. I've really been enjoying watching the A league over the last few years and through some sort of osmosis I managed to kick a goal in about the first 2 minutes, eeeeek. I'm pretty shit at stress so when the Belgians couldn't equalize i was literally chewing my hat.
In true skippy style we just did enough to get by, 8 minutes later history was made.

The exact location and date is yet to be defined, we plan on having a meeting during the nationals, so there is even more reason to get down there.
A lot of people dont realise that the SSNats is not run by a company or profiting organisation, its run by dudes who ride bikes. Any additional funds (if there is any) go back into the next years race or in this case the worlds.
When was the last time you went in a truly grass roots race?
Spread the word, about single speeding, the nationals and the worlds....your chance to be a WORLD CHAMP!

Aido

where are all the big SS

Who makes XL and XXL SS these days. Specialised have stopped, Niner are too short in the top tube and so it seems is everything else. Who makes a SS frame with an effective top tube 25.5 or longer. I aint going boutique and $2000 for a frame.

An XL SIR 9 has an ETT of 25.5" with a HT angle of 70.3
Running a 120 fork would increase the ETT slightly (see change from 80-100mm on the website) and would slightly slacken the HT as well since all the cool kids want slow handling these days.

I would want to run it rigid. What size is yours mate? My SC Highball is 26.5- 26 is the sweetspot for me

And so you should!
Mine's a L.
I've ridden L Niners for about 4 years and have loved them but am just now dabbling in M frames....

Trek superfly SS. I picked one up recently and XL fits me pretty well with a 70mm stem.

Apart from 32-18 being too high for me (now 32-20), stock stem being too long, bars being too narrow and the seat clamp breaking (seat post was slipping, used too much muscle) it's been a pretty good ride.

Now have syntace megaforce stem, syntace vector carbon bars, surly 20t cog and have a surly constrictor clamp on the way.

Hi SS Burner,

Can anyone recommend a mid priced chain ring? I need to replace my SS commuter's front chain ring, so I'm looking for something durable. Am also keen to know if the more expensive ones are worth it. I'm not worried about weight and use my SS as a commuter (100 km plus pw) and on the trails as a winter bike and fun bike in summer. Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Coast

On one chainrings are pretty cheap in comparison to others. They have both NW and normal.

Excuse me not reading the whole thread, but does anyone have recommendations for a bolt up rear hub? Struggling to keep the rear hub solid in the horizontal dropouts on my on one inbred with even a super tight internal cam QR.

Why not use chain tugs ? On one make some.

Have some non-on one chain tugs on there at moment but was hoping for a more elegant solution. Plus I find the QR doesn't sit so well with the chain tugs.

But I might have a look at the on-one QR chain tugs, thanks for the suggestion.

Hope ss.

Quick release hubs should never be used on horizontal dropouts
... Without $20 chaintugs.

Surely buying a new hub is not required to deal with a slippage issue ??

I ran an inbred ss for several years with an XT skewer and on one chain tugs. No problemo.

Ultra Lord

Hurts. Requires Money. And is nerdy.
Yeah, but they only work under pedalling loads. I've seen them move under braking. Quick release just isn't designed for hz dropouts. Not enough support for the skewer.

10mm bolt up is where it's at.

And Hopes trials ss hub is the best bang for buck bolt up ss specific hub out. More pickups that an street hooker, with less crabs! what could go wrong?

Exactly. If it's not moving under pedalling load it shifts under braking. And if it doesn't do either, I don't trust it I need it to work if I just crank on it halfway through a race if I get a stick through the tyre(has happened!). Can't afford the dentist bills due to my transient hypoxia

Will go with hope then, better start saving!
