Some awesome bikes on here so far...

Heres my first SS'er that isnt a jump bike.

I had a tensioner while using an xtr chain but the chainline was impossible to set up right AND, stupid me, didnt realise till after I tried to have a spin on it, that an regular chain would fit a SS rear sprocket. So, less a tensioner, plus a SS chain, here she is... in all her 4130 chromo goodness...

Hey setonz
That is one seriously nice bike......mmmmmm the sweet smell of steel
Why did you go with the tensioner not the eccentric bb?

Hey Pete, went with tensioner instead of EBB in the chance of wanting to run gears at a later date. Plan is to run s/s through the shitty Melbs winter and then see how i feel about it when the summer rolls around. Might be redundant if the rumour about a Yeti dually 29er come true. I will post an update after the ride tomorrow.

Yeah, I'm curious here too.

Unless you wanted to run gears at some stage.
Please don't.

Ajay, can I make a suggestion?
Flip the stem and run it on the headset, with the spacers on top. Then take a photo and post it up.
Might want to nose-down the saddle a little to suit too.

I reckon you might decide not to change it back :D

Well, the 1hun has now been converted from DJ to XC duties (at least until this rain stops, or I get my hands on a dedicated SS frame to build up).

Specs, nothing specialm but this bike is just an iterim thing until I do it properly.

Frame: 2004 Norco 1Hun, chromo something or other
Fork: 2005 Marzocchi DJ3 (to be replaced for XC duties by an 80mm Skareb)
Wheels: Mavic 223 (shimano rear hub, specialised stout front)
Cranks: XT
Brakes: Avid BB5 read, Hayes HMX1 front
Bar/Stem: Answer Protaper Bars, Easton Vice Stem (50mm).

How are all you folks with vertical dropouts achieving chain tension? Im building up an SS XC bike with vertical dropouts, hopefully It will get close enough with a normal chain or then a half link.

I used a DMR Tensionseeker II on a frame with vertical dropouts. Worked fine.

Chain tensioners, Surly make one and rohloff make one as well (see setonz's zion 29er) both really good.
Magic gear is great but takes a bit of experimenting.

I have a DMR on both a GT Pantera 32/20, for enduros 'cause I is old and also on my carbon framed a.comp 32/18. I also have a monocog 34/18 and it's lovely. When they say steel is real, they mean real heavy, nonetheless a lovely beast. I find the DMR is fine. :) Jack

Thanks! I have one piece of advice though, don't get an older French bike in the first place!! Or then make sure you check all the various components for compatability, ie. seatpost size, chainring bcd (if you plan to keep the stock cranks), bb thread type and bb spindle length. Most Carbolite models sport everything you don't want, i had one myself and i actually threw it out because i didn't need the hassles.
One thing i did recently 'discover' on my bike is that the bb thread is actually of the English type. I missed that completely when i first stripped it down because i was so certain it couldn't be anything other than French threading, even when i was tightening it up it didn't click! Now i have realised that my options have grown and i aren't stuck with the almost unsourcable chainring type. The only good thing with the current set-up is that i got near perfect chainline immediately, it was a total fluke for sure but i'll take it.

I'm pretty sure he knows about tensioners, he was referring to all those who have gone without them on their vertical dropout frames.
I have tried it on my old commuter/mtb and got the ratio right, however without a bolt up axle it just doesn't stay put well enough. I suppose that must be the secret then, no quick release on the rear.

Hey he asked????

I'm running Qr's on my vertical dropout ss's with disc brakes ....no problems

Thats the problem with finding the magic gear combination, you still need the right chain tension, if its too tight you'll have dramas.

Put on a tensioner.... thats the secret
or put on track end or paragon dropouts thats the more expensive secret

Baum Espresso - A dream bike. I started with the geometry of the 1x1
and raced it up a little. Since this photo was take, the useless CF bottle cage as gone (in favour of one that actually works) and has Goodrich brake lines added. This is a fast bike.
My SSources tell me that true single speed mtbing should only be rigid and with rim brakes. I know that the old Magura Racelines I'm putting on my SS were considered too hi tech by some to fit the 'holy' SS ethos ;)

The basis of my SS project is below.
