The Single Speed Thread

Gents, a little advice please.

I'm doing an 8 hour on the SS in a little over a weeks time and am wondering what gear to choose.

I normally run 34:17 (26") everywhere without too many problems but haven't ridden any longer than about 4 hours.

I'm considering running 34:18 for the 8 hour to got easier on the legs but have also thought about sticking with the 34:17.

Any suggestions as to which way to go?

What do others run for similar length races??
I did the Kellevie 6hr on the single speed a couple of years ago and just ran my normal ratio (32:17) - went pretty well for me. I'd stick with what you know.

The only one I know of that has a single speed category is the Surf Coast 3/6/12hr in near Anglesea towards the end of the year.

There are probably others though.

Just starting to get parts together for my first SSer! So far have
Niner One 9 Atomic blue - ordered
F29 2011 Terralogic 100mm 15mm QR - ordered
American Classic SS wheel set - Received

Still have to decide on the rest of the build.

Any ideas for a lite set of brakes?

Noob chain question

Just wondering if I use a 1/8" chain would that be overkill on a 29er, or would a 3/32" in an 7 or 8spd do the job better?
pardon my ignorance.
cheers H.

I use a 1/8" chain on 1/8" chainrings and cog on my 29er. No issue. Wouldn't use that chain on 3/32 rings if I had the choice.

Built my SS back up a few days ago, I forgot how much I love this bike! :)

Apologies for the terrible pic, I don't own a proper camera.

Running 32:14.

I asked a bike shop many years ago about going 1/8 on my SS and they said stay with 3/32 - you can use easily available chainrings, sprockets and any 8 or 9 speed chain. They also said that even if I had the legs of Sean Kelly I would never break a 3/32 chain on an SS. I followed there advise and no problems.

Bianchi Monstercross

I put this together from mainly spares I had lying around:

Bianchi Ibex 1991 - Tange iNfinity lugged mtb
CroMo fork from MC Cyclery
Diacompe DropV levers to Deore V brakes
Maxxis 2.1 crossmarks on Ritchey Rims & alivio hubs
Fuji road bars on no-name stem
old spd pedals on alivio cranks, race 40t chainring/19t sprocket (magic gear)
SDG bel air saddle on kalloy seatpole

Probably gonna sell it in a week or so if anyone is interested (when I get back from a camping trip).
