The Steel Spur

Liking the rig for sure! That's a nice bit of kit. Interesting that they went for the original Effigear box.

What are they quoting for time frame wise on oil changes? Any other maintenance needed for it?

Good to see I'm not the only one pedaling around a 19+ kg gearbox monster! 🤪

Do you think this will be an every ride thing or just as the box wears in?

The Spur was designed prior to the Mimic being available. Saves the hassle of a tensioner.
Makes 2x of us. Could run some lighter tyres but it's not what this bike is about. Lucky I've lost 5kg. Offset the weight of bike somewhat

Just as it wears in. Was alot better but the end of the ride. They recommend every year and/5000km for an oil change.

3 days at Thredbo was the first proper test of the bike along with the re-tuned NSR Dorados with new valve kit, 3rd chamber blank and bushings burnish to crown position. Also first time on Michelin DH16's.
At 190F/180R travel it handled everything I threw at it with ease. Incredibly smooth and chatter is virtually eliminated it feels like. Was able to ride 4 days with minimal fatigue compared to past trips.

Tell me about the forks. How do they feel different to stock?

Never rode them completely stock. Had just bushing burnished from the jump. Was getting some harshness mostly at low speed which was most likely some binding. With the new dual pinch bolt upper crown the fork is noticeability stiffer. The fork now is incredible with the changes. The use of more compression damping without the air spring causing harshness, its help with early /mid stroke plushness. Hand and arm pump free!

Yeah I figured that dual clamp would help bring them more into line with the Intend feel with less twisting (haven’t tested the theory yet though). I’m still running the open bath damper and am getting shims sticking causing a bit of clicking when I wind on the TPC so that’s the next fix. Great to hear your fork is working so well.

your setup and observation is interesting!
Generally the 3 chamber is more sensitive off the top than a regular 2 chamber design, and requires LESS compression damping for support, as it comes from the air spring. Excess compression damping is the usual thing attributed to harshness...

There was a fair bit of bushing drag with new crown set installed which was the low speed harshness.

The IRT chamber blocked and to set it at a specific length - turning it into a 2 chamber fork rather than 3 chambers - there are 2 spacers inside the IRT chamber. However these can be removed to make the fork more linear or more added to make it more progressive. The reason for this change is to allow the use of more compression damping without the air spring causing harshness. Tt should also help with early/mid stroke plushness.
Nige finds that 3 chamber air forks have too much spring force in the beginning to mid stroke and get very harsh as soon as you try to use functional compression damping.

I took Nige's advice as he hasn't let me astray with anything so far. Started off at my original pressures and have only dropped 4psi from the IRT. Definitely a significant improvement over the previous. No noticeable harshness at all and the able to use full travel now. Has that magic carpet feeling.

Fair enough if it feels better!
My experience is with an older dorado with IRT, and Marzocchi ATA (Don't laugh, when it works it works well)

On both I found setting the ++ much closer to the + pressure was the way to go for me. Around 15-20% higher. Just enough for the extra support, but no sudden brick wall of extra spring pressure

I found that more of an issue on the previous set I had the 36mm version. Currently on 63/116 psi with lots closed compression and open rebound.

Thought I'd see what all the fuss is about. 1 ride in so far with out pads worn in. They feel really solid with plenty of bite. Mounting is more fiddly than it needs to be though.

They take Hope Tech 4 V4 pads. Just need to bore out an extra 1mm to fit the bolt through.

Nice one. A bit of thought there, even with the drill out

The best ones I've used in the last few years are Trickstuff power for organic or Uberbike race matrix for sintered/semi sintered, and now on to e-matrix which are similar but meant to be better than race matrix, though its not a difference I can really feel so far.

The Power pads didn't last long enough for my liking. The matrix pads are on my list after I try some ceramic pads. By all accounts the stock pads are meant to be average.

I liked the race matrix pads in my "zraktros".

Just fitted some e-matrix pads to the "zrams", will see how they go tomorrow
