I was there yesterday at the time trial and did not see any magpie action.
They come down a hill in the last 2km and are flying by the time they hit the finish line so I wonder if the Maggie’s would have any time to swoop at that bit. Maybe the Maggie just go for kooks on bikes.
They're just saving their energy for maximum carnage from a coordinated peleton strike on the day.

Was riding along the other weekend and as I was climbing up a hill this bugger starts going me, which surprised me as I was not expecting it this late in the year. Then on the way back I knew where it would be so I put the hammer down as it was downhill I’m clocking around 50k and then bam this sucker is still getting me, I was surprised how quick it was, I got up to 60k but was still scrapping my helmet.

This could also be a YLYL, helmets designed to protect you from maggies.

Just looks like some socks over your ears will do the same

You could do the sock thing, or take the ear flaps off of an old snowboard/ski helmet. Eye protection is obviously mandatory, but the helmet doesn't have any. A big pair of stick on googly eyes for the back of your helmet, and some big zip ties might be more useful <---- do they actually work??

Zip ties sort-of.
They come into land then get touched by them and like a branch look for somewhere else.
Problem is its your shoulders and neck/ears that are next on that list.
Smart and thats maybe why they tend to get ears etc in frequently seasonal areas, as they say they learn over time which people to swoop and where.

I wear a Bell Super 3R (with the chinbar removed) when out JRA/gravelburning. It does a pretty good job defending from Magpie strikes as it's a lot wider than roadie helmets, but still breathes great and also has the added bonus of a visor when you're looking into the sun or whatnot.

I’m going full proframe as soon as I hear the slightest indication of an unsubstantiated rumour of swooping over here.
