Trails in Canada

The end of the road

Well, that’s it. There’s snow on the ground, ice on the lake and the bears have gone to bed for the winter. No more riding in Canada for me.

In about 5 weeks we will head home to Australia via a stop-over in Auckland.

It’s time to look back on the riding I’ve done over the past 4 months and tally a few things up.

All up, I headed out for 38 rides covering just under 600km and climbing just over 17,000 vertical metres. I hit 4 bike parks and countless trails in what became my ‘local’ region around Nelson in BC.

I did my longest climb, sketchiest descent (those two were linked), went faster, jumped further and smiled harder than ever before. I rode more timber features than I have ever seen in my life, learned to ride slabs, found the greatest dirt on earth and, later, rode the same trails when they were frozen rock hard.

I rode under the haze of wildfire smoke, through soaking BC rain and in snow.

I met heaps of great locals, 3 grizzly bears, a ton of squirrels, 2 skunks and a hoary marmot.

I totally cooked 2 sets of brake pads and destroyed a back tyre (it’s till on my bike but looking very worse for wear). My bike was awesome though and all up I required no more than one brake bleed and one tyre plug to get me through the entire trip. Hats off to Kavenz, EXT, Bike Yoke, Shimano and Magura with special mention to my wheel builder - me! My Hope Pro 4 hubs and DT rims/spokes/nipples got subjected to some pretty hectic trails and came through entirely unscathed and not even needing a tweak with the spoke wrench.

Highlights of the trip would have to be:
  • being towed in to a couple of big features at Coast Gravity Park by a 10yo kid
  • taking part in a local Enduro race here in Nelson
  • Having a crack at wooden features I’ve never ridden before like massive roller coasters
  • The views from everywhere. The fucking views are amazing.
Thanks for coming on this trip with me. Thanks for all the comments in the thread. It’s been a lot of fun to document this along the way.

See you on some dusty over hard pack trails in Oz real soon!
