Trump..... (The Sophistry Thread)

133,360 views 22 May 2025 The Stakes
In this episode of The Stakes, host Brad Rourke speaks with Kettering Foundation Senior Fellow J. Michael Luttig, former US Court of Appeals judge and conservative legal scholar. Luttig issues a stark warning: the United States may have little left of its constitutional democracy by the 2026 midterms. Drawing from his recent article in The Atlantic, Luttig argues that the first 100 days of President Trump’s second term constitute an unprecedented legal and institutional assault. He outlines how executive actions—ranging from tariffs and deportations to attacks on the Federal Reserve and attempts to commandeer federal elections—lack constitutional or statutory authority. With Congress unwilling and the Supreme Court unable to check his power, “There is nothing to stop this president for the next three and a half years other than the American people,” says Luttig.

So. Midterms huh. Whats the current odds on that even being held?
Hmmm, that’s a good point. I’ve been too focused on how he avoids an election in 2028 but of course they won’t want to lose the majority in mid terms…

even Putin has elections.... free and fair is a different question
I was I Cuba in 2005 and there was some sort of event going on. I asked about it and found it was an election. Or I should say, an ‘election’.

I think it was more for local representation in Havana rather than anything National but still… Was an interesting place to be in 2005 with Fidel still in power and on TV every night. To be honest, I loved it. I’m sure there were many people with very different experiences of the regime but it was one of my favourite places to visit and spend time staying with locals as we travelled around the island.

And theeen...

Trump says he'll delay a threatened 50% tariff on the European Union until July

and Mr "I'll stop the war in 24hrs, even before I become president"

“I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him.
He has gone absolutely CRAZY! He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers.
Missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever,” Trump posted on Truth Social, hours after he told reporters, “I’m not happy with what Putin is doing. He’s killing a lot of people, and I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin.”

Putin has been doing exactly this for 3 years already....
Only thing that’s changed is the resources Ukraine is giving to Trump which he is honouring by doing fuck all except updating his language slightly

humor me, the really bad stuff being.....?
(Yes, I have seen and read about a lot of the bad stuff so far, and it has been pretty shit)
Bessent lifted the debt floor, they'll be printing more money, which will mean they'll cop a heap of inflation. Central banks across the world are topping up with gold because they don't trust Trump with the USD. If Trump keeps on going on with the on-and-off-again tariff war, nations will start to abandon the USD by having a sell off, which will devalue it.

The one with a face like an orange tinted pig's busted arsehole looks fucking mental. Pootin is more of a calculating psychopath, IMO.

I don't know. In those 2 photos putin looks confused, like he has just walked in on a deer friend having passionate sex with an orang-utan. He is like wtf, but also nit judging.

QE - Quantitative Easing aka printing zillions more in currency notes is not new, but keeping the US/world economy functioning simply by creating more debt cannot be used as a 'solution' indefinitely. There WILL be a fairly nasty crash, reset, whatever. It's just a matter of when.

I grew up in the Joh era in Q. I revelled in his demise and humiliation as a teen. I considered Donny to be a modern incarnation of that incomprehensible moronic dictator. I have had a few old interviews come across my feed. By comparison to Donny Joh was an orator, coherent and intelligent. Compared to any normal person still a bag of shit though.

There's going to be a lot of people screwed in the US, they can print all the money they want, it will just make things worse.

I'd imagine that Putin was chuckling to himself reading that and thinking "the video tapes I have show you doing REALLY BAD stuff in Russia..."
