This prolly belongs in the Fuckwits and/or Stupid questions threads but I couldn’t decide so here goes o_O

Changed the volume spacer the other day, had a bit of difficulty doing the air can back up. Went for another change and spotted the end of this poking up from below the nut where the shaft goes in to the damper. I think it was dislodged the first time when the air can got sucked right down, and that was the source of the resistance when it was tight to do up (by hand)
The shock seems to work normally without it and holds air but obviously the ring was there for a reason ! Should I stop riding until I can get it sorted or can I get away with it for a few rides ? The black spots seem to be molded in to the plastic, they don’t rub off. Some aren’t on the surface.

What shock was it?
Whaddya mean “was” ? It’s not dead yet I hope !!
It’s a Fox Float EVOL, Trek version with the”Reaktiv” thru-shaft..on the current model Fuel EX 9.8

It should stay in its little groove and hold the seal in place.
That tallies with the diagrams of Fox shocks I’ve been able to find. Didn’t manage to find the exact match. I’ll get it fixed by someone competent but I don’t think there’s time to get it done before the weekend when I’ve got an enduro to do. I’ve taken annual leave to get the weekend free so I don’t want to cancel.
As far as I can see it looks like the worst that could happen is the seal fails, it’s going to need taking apart anyway so I’m tempted to ride on and send it away next Monday

I had a tentative go at getting it back in but it was uncooperative and I decided to see what wisdom you fellas had to offer. Will have another go ! Thanks all :)

Where are you located? You might be able to pick one up at an LBS or Suspension specialist?

What size is your shock? Someone might have just what you are looking for.

while fox/rockshox would have you believe otherwise, it is a industrial grade, very common, split back up ring. any hydraulic/o-ring supplier can sell you some. they are made of teflon. 4-6 bucks each.

you need the inner diameter, outer diameter and thickeness to order another. take the still good one with you to get an exact fit. possibly the supplier won't have a split one, just cut it on an angle with a sharp knife.

Ended up taking the shock to RNR Suspension in the Perth hills, and got them to put an air can seal kit in it. I think they might have undercharged me a bit, $89 including a few hours bike hire to pass the time. Had a good ride around some of the Kalamunda circuit on a Trek Roscoe 8, which didn’t convert me to 27.5 even a little bit.

Diggety thread dig.

My Rockshox SIDluxe on my Spur has developed a bit of a strange noise, it still works 100% but could very easily be annoying.

It seems it was a common problem on Monarchs but have found this older video showing the same thing from a few years back on MTBR.

Mine is not just as loud as this blokes but its still fairly noticeable.

Any ideas before I drop it in for a warranty assessment.

Video starts at the right point.

wolf whistle shock could get you slapped
Did the mtbr thread suggest any resolution? Maybe grease partially blocking a port?

Take the air can off and give it an inspection.

This will not void your warranty and will only take 5 min.

Not sure how the shock is setup on your frame but you can often do an inspection by releasing the pressure, unscrew the air can, then dismount only the air can end from the frame and get the air can off with the other end of the shock still on the bike.

Check the seals and teflon rings.

No not really a solution apart from RockShox says it does not affect the operation.

I did that last night, even added a few ml of oil. Will have another look online tonight and see if I can find anything.

May take a video and post on MTBR Spur thread or suspension thread.

It clearly affects the operation, it make a f-ing annoying noise. They wouldn’t release a product to market if that was normal operation. Good luck with the investigations.
Listening closely, it sounds like a scratching noise... I dont reckon its doing any good either.

Mr Greenfield
That’s an odd noise.

Initially I was confused, looking at the clip wondering where the SIDeluxe was. Then I see the clip is 9 years old.

Ozzy is the shock still behaving? That clip sounds like the IFP has lost its charge and is rubbing inside the damper tube, but it’s too loud me thinks.

Adding to summits suggestions, get the air can off, bolt the shock back up and run it though it’s travel again.
