[VIC] Melbourne - Favourite Urban Ride Spots?

Guzman

Squid
Hi peeps,

Couldn't see a thread on favourite urban ride spots..? I have been exploring up the Maribyrnong River Trail near home, around Steele Creek Reserve. There's some great single-track perfect for a quick ride after work or a sneaky weekend sesh without having to travel outside the city.

I think we're pretty lucky in Melb...the whole Fairfield area has a wide range of different tracks too (including some knee-wrecking chutes and drops).

Whats your local urban off-road playground? Always keen to find a new spot. Post any choice piccies for inspiration.

Cheers :)

Just past Westerfolds Park out near Templestowe along the Yarra trail is a nice xc loop. It has been called the pink ribbon loop in the past. It's not too technical but it can be quite a workout.

Pump Track RIP

The pump track is flooded. It was a work of art. Rest in peace. Boys - if you rebuild it they will come

My backyard...Maribyrnong river :D

Sh!t man, I know that area well.

Have you been across the bridge near the golf course? It will be really boggy now but in dry weather there's some fun stuff down there.

Yeah the whole area is mucky..esp tracks down close to riverbank. She needs time to heal :)

Where are these trails? I ride from Flemington to Buckley St after work regulary. Do I need to keep heading into the gully?

There is singletrack from IKEA Richmond to Templestowe and beyond, running mostly alongside the Yarra. In places it's on both sides of the river.

From a closeness point of view, it's my fave. Shortly further afield, Plenty Gorge has some wicked XC trails running through it.

I went up there a couple of weeks ago, you might also want to take a machete the wet spring has led to gret growth of everything. Especially fennel and thistles.
Thistles are not fun to hit, the thorns penetrate full finger gloves and the flower heads really hurt if hit at speed.
The 4wd tracks beside the river, don't expect too much this summer, and maybe some of the lakes might drain soon.
There is potential for much more over this side.

Maps please

Likewise - any chance of maps to go with the pics? I ride the Yarra Trails and would love to find some more good tracks I can ride to.

Maybe mods could organise a sticky with maps of members' favourite trails in each city?

I did the "groomed" trail from Essendon to Brimbank this morning. It's farked. Washed away in several areas and repaired with roadbase. Chopped up, and pretty loose. I was fine on 2.2" tyres but the two girls I saw on roadies were suffering!

If you cross the bridge from Chifley Drive to Afton st and head toward Canning Reserve you cant go wrong...lots of good track. Best to leave it when its been raining though, as peeps are saying. I went as far as Brimbank Park on Sunday. Beware on thin tyres...have copped quite a few punctures from these little hard wooden thorns. They are like nails!

..also I should note, the ecosystem has gone into overdrive since the floods. Rabbits, dragonflies and mice everwhere. Last wk I rode over a bloody 1m black snake about 3km south of Brimbank Pk....scared the crap outta me! Was lying across the track....I didnt stop to swap stories ;) Think it mighta been a redbelly

Tubeless with sealant is the only way to ride this river trail and Brimbank - unless you own a tube factory!!!
