WEMBO - 2013 World Solo 24Hr Championships Canberra

Four weeks out and silence reigns ....

In 2010 when the earlier version [Adrenalin] of this event was hosted here in Canberra there were 1844 posts and 185 pages on Rotorburn. About 150 of those pages preceded the start of the race with a great deal of discussion, banter, 'sold out' and riders who 'forgot' to enter and snakes. I wasn't part of it then as I didn't ride a bike then. I do now and I've subsequently enjoyed reading back over the rider accounts and getting a sense of the scale of the event.

I've no doubt there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes from the Organising Committee [OC] from WEMBO and CORC but .... pre race discussion, PR, news seems non existent unless it's all happening on some other forum that has escaped me.

Have these 24Hr Solo races hit the wall? Are peeps looking for a new challenge? These aren't the sort of events that contestants are going to enter in the last week so one must assume that the numbers are getting pretty close to the final tally by now .... who knows?

I've been working on my riding slowly strategy [fortunately I'm gifted in this regard] but after my Wednesday ride encounter I can see there is a speed/skill conflict with my bunny hops. ...:llama:

I ran specialised fast tracks F & R for the solo nationals and will have them on my bike again for WEMBO. If it rains you will need something with abit more grip so ill probably take some maxxis igniters or similar as back ups... The long range forecast doesn't look good at the moment.

I'm heading up to Stromlo tomorrow for a good, solid amount riding around the 24hr course.....

Not looking forward to seeing any bloody snakes though, ffs, I hate the things, they scare the crap out of me.

Its my first 24... I think the reason I'm quiet is because deep down, im crapping myself about the race! I'm not going to win any medals or the likes, but just trying to race my bike for 24hrs is making me nervous.

Yes, very quiet. I would love to know how many entries. I keep getting emails about the teams event. Not one about Wembo. Event last year we raced in light rain for about 6 hr on and off. Parts of the track became unridable by morning.

I heard about 240 entries so far.

Yep very different to 24 hours of adrenaline where we got updates, rider profiles etc every other week.

Hi guys,

My take on it is that most of all the other guys who used to post on here, have either, stopped racing this type of thing or doing a different type of riding all together.

I know I haven't done a 24hr race since 2010 and 24hr solo races for 7 years before were enough and time to try something different, like a team

yuo should try it, you get to actually stop and eat for 30mins a lap. :)

This.

The number of people who previously regularly rode 24 solo events, or were considering doing so in future seem to have just evaporated overnight.

..... some took up golf!

Well Mr Dreggsy, your 2010 post race post was one that I read through .....

I don't go out again i was there to podium and after all of the fussing around i had lost alot of time in the very late stages of the game. I went from 6th to 10th in 40mins and there was no way I had the proper energy to chase those spots back so my GF and I had a well earned nap.

i am now going to sell all my bikes and take up golf
Taking up eating and golf is bad for your health...:nono:

Have had the same thought of selling all my bikes mid 24 hr race, never been bad enough to think about golf though.....

I thought I was done with solo 24s too but decided on 1 last crack. I was not so happy with my 2010 performance, only 16 laps. I had time for 1-2 more but brain said not to go out again.....

With the invent and take-over of social media the audience is probably slipping with the old forum. But that isn't to say there hasn't been much talk re WEMBO, clearly not as much compared to 2010.

Still, we try. This is not the course, suggestions have been made it will be more like the Scott 24/5 course. Albeit I know plenty of riders heading out to Stromlo with the 2010 rendition etched into their GPS, in training for this year.

Just wait and see?

Oh? So it wasn't the course at all….

Well Crumble it's not surprising that the secret training peeps, me included, have been trawling around the 2010 24hr solo Stromlo lap because that's what the WEMBO website said was going to be 'the lap'. But when we check back to the event website it now says:

Course Map and Profile
This shows the a sample course for Canberra.* The course length shown is 19.5 Km. * *It can be reduced if required, depending on the number of riders entered

The final and official course map will be published here 2 weeks priot to the race

the editing mice have been into the page and [slightly pissed by the look of it] have made a few subtle changes.

Your link to a possible/probable alternative route is an interesting 'invention'. Given the multiplicity of public 'social media' options out there I can only assume that your sources are from that well trodden pre internet social media path called 'gossip' …. still works pretty well...

I'm racing WEMBO. My first attempt at a 24hr. Am I excited? Shit yeah. Am I nervous? Shit yeah.

I'm in the process of getting kit together, getting my head sorted with my wife who will be crewing for me... Just around the corner now!

I'd be interested to hear how many people have entered!
