What are you listening to NOW?

It's not meant to be some empirical survey of the best quality, most original music ever made.

It's just a popular vote among whoever happens to be listening to JJJ at the moment, plus a bit of social media-fuelled vote harvesting from fans of particular bands.

If they did it again in a couple of years it would probably look quite different.

I saw a survey that said the Mazda 3 is the most popular car with people 25 and under.

Well I've had the pleasure of driving a bunch of rental cars in recent months, and the Mazdas were hands down the shittest of all of them.

But that's just, like, my opinion man.
I don’t mind the Mazda 3, road noise notwithstanding…

They gave me a CX-30 and a CX-5, both awful. Then an X-Trail which was better and a Forester which was pretty good.
Urrgh, all those are pretty awful… The 3 at least doesn’t have the horrid suv handling.

Had a current model 3 as a rental a couple of months ago in a GT spec and I could live with it for sure. Very handy bit of kit of the back country roads.

Music hasn’t moved on. If it had DoubleJ would be devoid of new music.

Time has moved on, new generations are today’s youth and they, unsurprisingly have different tastes to previous generations. As per their charter TripleJ has moved on too.

I rarely listen to any radio other than Radio National. I’d rather curate playlists or make my own music to listen to these days.
Same. Spent some amount of time and money on a fancy amp and speaker set up in the car and then listen to radio national a lot…

Bad insomnia night last night and found myself going down numerous YouTube rabbit holes about a resurgence of physical media and how everyone wants to own their libraries now. I apparently missed the memo where one didn’t …. I never did get around to trying a streaming service and jsut have all my old CDs ripped and any new music is downloaded in lossless files and my phone is treated like an iPod - which apparently is now quaintly old school!

Now I need to find my old Kenwood double cassette deck….

That’s even overstating their talent in my books. I never got them. Catchy sure but.. Maybe I was too old at the time.

It was a strange time. I liked the stuff they pushed out prior to the first album which was hit and miss. They were always on my must see list for festivals. Then the second album came out and I resonated perfectly with the opener "i like your old stuff better than your new stuff" and that was it for me.

They have always been experimental and for some people that worked, it didn't for me as a youngster.

Yeah, Einstürzende Neubsuten was experimental. Regurgitator not so much. I did like the ‘not taking yourself seriously’ attitude though.

I preferred Pangaea which was the main band and the 'gurge was the side hussle. Funny how that turned out.

Anyways the first 2 EPs from Regurgitator were great.

I was also slightly surprised that no TISM songs made it, but not too shocked, they really were a product of their time and unlike some of the more mainstream pub rock bands, they don't have the nostalgia. But damn they were also ferocious live.

are they old and forgetful? or fell asleep and had a nanna nap?
(yeah, i saw them at little uni on their last tour... with no young person in sight in the audience :D and Shonen Knife were support)

I saw them at one of the festivals, maybe a Big Day Out... It was a sweltering 38+ In full sun, and they came on stage in dressed up, looked like a couple of metal heads with really long haired wigs on. Started playing and everyone was wondering who the hell these guys were...
After the 1st song you could hear one of them say "dude it's fucking hot can we take these wigs off"
"No! This is awesome keep it on!"
Not sure how they managed to be fully dressed in black jumping around like spazs and still playing music .
Also don't think I've ever seen that many lobster tans in one place.
This also reminds of Rage against the machine, killing in the name of... 40,000people jumping on the spot, the solid ground at Flemington was literally moving up and down a good 3-4inches and it registered on the local seismographs as a small earthquake. Probably the craziest live band experience I've ever had.

I preferred the mark of cain.

Those first 2 eps were good.

Tism are a unique bit of artistic expression. It is a surprise for them not to have scored in there somewhere.

And where were the easy beats? And johnny O'Keeffe?

I saw rage against the machine at a big day out. It was excellent.

even with small oldie crowd, they were 110% on point and killed it.. great show!

if you haven't seen the Guitar Wolf movie... "Wild Zero".... must see! very odd (and they were very drunk when I saw them live...)

Service Ace is a Hokkaido band.. i have a couple of their albums (Starting Over, Lots of Luck) and they were theme song of the local snowboarding TV show :)

No not seen that. Will though!

The Mark of Cain. YES!!! Saw them at the Prince with Helmet. Two bands cut from the same cloth.

I have one of those did I or didn't I Mandela effect situations with Helmet. I am pretty sure I saw them at the bar on the hill when I was a student...but i am not entirely confident that is true.

Mark of cain came to my knowledge at the right time for maximum teenage enjoyment.

I'll just drop these here.
Notable omissions, now we’re talking.

Would have liked to have seen…
