What did you do TO / WITH / FOR your bike today!

It does ride well in winter

Mmm don’t think so @fjohn860, pretty sure it’s where it’s where I used to be the local trail fairy and spent a many a weekend on the shovel and fire rake fixing or building parts of it, as I live pretty close by. The new guy who taken over the maintenance has gone next level but has irked parks as it was fine to ride as long nothing new was built, but so far so good, they have made some entrances for MTBs be fucked if I could get the ebike over the gate.

I think Matty is talking about somewhere different.

YEWWWW Yangs, a crowd favourite. What's with the blue gravel they're putting in on the XC side..
Good way to ruin a trail that has been there for 20+ years. The place is made from fine pea gravel, there's even a quarry next door, surely they can find a pile of that somewhere rather than bringing in construction spec crush rock.

Nah, End of Antimony mine Rd... They have signs and everything now, You only really ride there when you feel like questioning why you ride bikes at all.

Yeah, don't know what the blue crushed rock is all about.

Just after that blue crushed rock there used to be 2 tree roots about 2m apart that ran across the track at 90° so no danger to anyone. If you hit it at the right speed you could double them and straightline the next corner. Honestly the most exciting part of that trail. Some balloon knot fkn removed them though.

Now it's only exciting on my '96 XC bike. And mostly that's just down to the sketchy brakes.

Those flat XC trails are perfect for the Mrs on her hard tail eeb. We avoid them in summer as the corners blow out and she is full beginner skill level, but over the winter months it's quite enjoyable for her out there...that is until we got to the blue crush rock, roughest bumpiest section of trail there now.
Reminds me of the shit they did out at forrest that everyone complained about, and probably done by the same bloke.

Try it rigid and single speed, that’s when you really question your life choices

I hate blue metal on trails. It's often used on areas that are wet but it's awful on any corners. They did this on the beginner trails in the open area at George Town's Tipp Hills trails. I think because is was a clay type soil and they didn't want to wait until it properly dried out. But no it is dry and hardened up it's all loose and sketchy in all the corners. Plus unless you shuttle you have to ride it to get to the rest of the trails.

I can think of only one trail where gravel topping has actually worked: the Baridjaru climb at Forrest (Vic). It gives decent grip on what can sometimes be a very slick surface, and because it's an ascent, you're rarely going hard enough to dislodge the topping. Everywhere else it can get stuffed!

A big part of the fun of MTBing is dealing with how trail surfaces behave in wet vs dry conditions.

On the right type of bike, the flat side of YEWies can be a lot of fun, but a lot of that comes down to expecting some drift on the sand. Where it gets interesting is judging the anticipated drift and exactly where to start turning into a curve. Matching anticipated drift with pre-emptive turn-in is a pretty sublime experience! 😎

There was a few corners that needed work in a certain council area near me, it was perfectly described on social media as someone emptied the stones out of the bottom of a goldfish bowl on them. Fuck sake it was like riding on ball bearings. Blue metal would have been 100 times better.
Reckon they spotted some tiny stones that didn't look out of place, so they poured the little brown fishtank balls all over them 🤣

We tried to ride Forrest that ultra wet weekend a month or so ago. It was raining so hard in the three days we were there, that we only got one ride in, and still got wet.

Anyway, we rode Follow the Dog and all the surrounding trails... and Follow the Dog was the only trail not turned into a blue metal super highway. Fricken boring. It did look to be over clay, but what a let down from what they were.

I never really gelled with that section of Forrest, but the gravel capping did make it worse. I hope to whatever deity they don't throw toppings on the Yaugher section, 'cos with all their variabilty, they are the best natural surface trails I've ever met!

Not sure on the condition of these now but back 15yrs ago, the Yaugher trails were some of the best in the country if not the best.

Yep, Yaugher is great... don't mind Red Carpet either, except for the boring climb.
