It's Not Easy Being Green
Just getting some tyres ready tonight and I thought I'd throw these 2 together for comparison. Any tyre gurus that can pick these 2? The is one pretty big difference I suppose, but tread wise, almost identical!

Threw in a new rear mech cable.
Strangely started to break wires at the mech clamp after only 600km. Maybe too tight from factory.

Redhill roadside trails today, until about an hour into it when I busted another front spoke aluminium nipple ... grrr. Still, it was ace, and we had fun. Just took it a bit easier on the way back to the car.

-Mounted a Set of Maxxis Crossmark Lust tyres to my 2000 Mongoose Pro commuter MTB. Much lighter than the 10yr old Maxxis tyres that were pretty worn, many KM's on and off the dirt.
-New tubes for my Giant STP.
-Mounted my Yakima rack to the Daily/Family driver, quite interesting to work out how the best way to mount my bikes in relation to the arm that holds the front tyre, 1 inch from the front fork enables a 26 to travel a bit when going around a roundabout. I live in Canberra, so review coming up soon.

So I had one of these style racks and had to use a strap on the front wheel at the bottom to keep it from moving around. I found it a nerve wracking rack to use compared to others I have owned.

Thats a good idea, I was trying to think about what else I could do as that arm really needs to be in the exact spot or my 26er rolls when cornering.

This weekend rather than today.

Rode You Yangs Friday night, managed to dodge the XC racers and get in a lap down Boulder, Trav’s and Cressy’s before dark. Such an epic facility to have so close to Melbourne, although ‘close’ is relative in peak hour traffic.

Saturday, put flat pedals back on the bike and took the dog down to the Anglesea Bike Park. He quickly figured out I was just doing laps and snoozed at the bottom. Wasn’t game to give the North Shore log rides around the back too much of a go with clips, but was good fun with flats and the option to bail.

Today, got in a quick squirt around the trials closer to town in Anglesea - Clandestino, Foxy, Scar Tissue, Lust for Life etc. Was a bit warm and sandy but good fun. Had a couple of rectum puckering moments with the new 800mm bars at speed through a few of the gaps between trees, but can now confirm they will fit.

Have you tried the Eumeralla trails down near there? A bit closer to Geelong, just turn left (if you're heading towards Anglesea) into Hurst Rd and you've found them. Lots of fun to be had.

Had a blast around Stockyards yesterday, late afternoon/early evening. I lost count of the number of roos and/or wallabies I saw on or near the trails.

Yep, I was lucky enough to grow up down there. They’re good fun once you wrap your head around the layout, although a bit sandy at times.

There’s a couple of good little unmarked extras too. The descent from Red Rocks and also the descent from the lookout down to the netball club are a couple of favourites.

There’s also a whole bunch of (fairly rough) singletrack in the area bounded by the top end of Harvey St, O’Donnys and the GOR, and the singletrack all the way through to Aireys.

Rebuilt an old P-series front wheel for the commuter. Thing was barely turning and I thought it was probably stuffed, but a good clean out and repack with marine grease and thing is spinning smoothly like a demon again. Got to love the old cup and cone hubs.

Also scored a free nw chainring from a friend of a friend of a friend on Saturday, which precipitated ordering a bunch of 11 speed gear for a rebuild project I've been contemplating for ages.

Bugger about the rear light. Maybe retrace your ride. I've found stuff I've lost.

Tonight, I replaced all the remaining eight year old alloy nipples that were left in my Dads Axes' front wheel. Our ride was cut short yesterday, 'coz one alloy POS went ta ta. A couple of them were a right pain to extract, one was totally impossible, so cut the spoke time. Developed a sneaky dual tool approach, using both a spoke spanner and a flat head screwdriver at the same time. One was so stuffed, it required a multigrip and the screwdriver treatment. Hate alloy nipples to the max. Anyway, all gone. Brass nipples on all spokes now. Phew. Couldn't be fagged tubelessing it, so that's tomorrow night, er, tonight.

Could have been anywhere along about 15km of rough gravel road, a lot of it in blue metal - chances of spotting a little black plastic square marginal to none from the drivers seat of a car. And no time or energy to ride it... I didn’t have it on either - if I had I would have waited for dark and gone looking for it!
