Im a security guard at the moment. I dig it. Everyday is something different and I get to work at a few interesting places. Im definately learning how to be more of an arsehole everyday although I do find if im super polite most people will listen and follow my instruction.

is there even a job available in Adelaide at the moment? Do you like standing in super markets flogging of shitty goods?
There are jobs available in my field - well certainly ones advertised. What's really pissing me off is the lack of feedback or communication. I've had one "thanks but no thanks" from an application (fine, at least I know then), deafening silence from everyone else. Considering the level of time it takes to put in a quality application/cover letter/address selection criteria etc. not hearing a snippet of info as to whether you've been successful or not (despite calling/emailing) is both unprofessional and deeply fucking pathetic.

End rant.

I am 1000% with you on this one. Even a generic email sent out to all unsuccessful applicants would be nice. I applied to over 200 positions this year and only ever heard back from 2

4th Year Adult Apprentice Electrician and love every minute of it. Apprenticeship has been super painful as an adult because of the money. I started in domestic then went to commercial but have been working in the industrial sector for 5 months now and at 41 I finally know what I want to do with myself.

Did you find it hard getting your foot in the door being a mature aged apprentice? One of my managers wants to be an electrician but he thinks no one wants him because he's mid twenties.

Also you picked a good industry for work.

Motorcycle industry for over 20 years. I moved OS, think orange bikes, and miss the Aussie weatherand surfing but I do live 10 min bike ride from the start of the Alps. It was -3 degrees on the way to work this morning.
I stalk the Rotorburn forum for my hits of Aussie humor. Thanks guys!

I did for sure and ended up doing 3 years with two different owner operators which wasn't great. Now with a big company and life's good.

I feel the 'apprentice' moniker to employers screams cheap labour and adults cannot work for a starting wage of $11p/h so the majority wont pay the extra for someone who can do the same job. Some will, but it took me 4 years to find one!

there is a lot of companies that would prefer mature age apprentices, because most of those whom go for them are family people or ones that have moved on from partying and coming to work hungover
from the apprentices that i have had work under me, all the M.A apprentices were really good and willing to have a real good go at stuff, most have already had dead-end career and wanted to do something more with their lives
all the young ones spend all fucking day on tinder or twitface, trying to avoid doing anything, and thats if they bother to show up at all!
if i was an employer, it would be only M.A. apprentices...

if you are worried about the cash as a M.A.
as above said, stick with the big companies, as most have special conditions for mature age entries..they know that you will probably have kids and a mortgage
try companies like RCR Tomlinson/O'Donnell Griffin, Stowe, Fredon, Spotless, Transfield etc
Good luck, its a great trade with so many differant fields!

Up until this year I was the first "standard" age apprentice my company had hired. I started here in my third yeah, with two mature age third years and a mature first in the mechanical side, and electrical we had one 4th year mature age.

There are companies that prefer the more mature gent. You tend to know the bloke is serious, as opposed to some fresh faced, minty chap who picked sparky cause he didn't get into uni.

The younger apprentices will get the shits though about the wage difference. I hated it.

On topic, I'm a fitter and machinist specialising working in HVAC breakdowns. Things break, and my company gets called in to fix it. I mainly deal with rebuilding motors, compressors, fans, pumps etc. A lot of internal rigging, welding, alignments (thank fuck we have lasers, not bloody feeler gauges and dials), fan balances and vibration analysis (fancy way of saying we stick springs and waffle pads under shit. bahaha). The only machining I tend to do is reclamation work, i.e. sleeving shafts and whatnot when bearings spin, or one off jobbies of my own design to make things work.

The work is varied which is nice. I spent two years as a toolmaker, and couldn't handle high volume manufactoring. Having to work under supervisors sucks, so its nice atm. Have my own decked out ute, and get to think for myself.

I'm surprised so many people enjoy their job. I've hated every job I've had. My dream is semi retirement by 40. I'm not far away from getting it.. Just want to ride Mx, Mtb, drink beer and hang with family. I'm a boss and it sucks too.

Am another one of those mech engineers you meet on the shuttles. work for a company making water chillers for air conditioning. Don't really have a job description - just do what needs to be done. most of the people are great, have laughs every day with the guys in the office and the factory. There can be some very long hours now and again with deadlines for tenders or equipment deliveries and a fair bit of pressure/responsibility. People seem to get excited when i say i work for an air conditioning company but less excited that the smallest thing we make is probably 50x larger than they need for the pool room...

I work in IT as a Desktop Engineer. If you work in an office, and your computer has an issue which leads the help desk to say 'we need to rebuild your PC', my team and I are the people who make it so that it all happens automatically. Same for if you need a particular program installed on your computer - click a button, and we've made it so it just happens.

There are a lot of frustrations in my job, but I've been there for 14 odd years now, and I love it. I work with some awesome people - including some of the people I ride with the most, so chat about riding happens a lot. If I've got an idea about something I can do to make all the users lives easier, there's a good chance that I'll be able to put that into practice.

Plus, this afternoon while I was working on my main monitor, I had my TV tuner card plugged in and playing the 1st cricket test on my 2nd monitor, which is a pretty sweet deal really!

Long term bureaucrat, currently in regional natural resource management, preparing planning and policy documents. That sort of thing. After twenty something years of this I'm thinking natural resource management is a crock and would much rather join the rest of the world in maiming and destroying what we little have left rather than pay lip service to helping the Great Unwashed pretend to think otherwise.

Save the Planet:Fuck a Koala
A very common theme amongst bureaucrats, especially in environment (especially after the last few years)... Thankfully I'm still getting enough interesting and vaguely rewarding things to do to keep me largely entertained.
