What made you decide to e-bike?

For me, I'm still a healthy 48 year old, but the Tassie trail networks are just getting bigger and bigger and a 40km+ day on the bike just wrecks me. I wanted something that I can comfortably do a 50km ride and upwards of 800m vert on single track.
I bought a second hand Levo SL and love it. I still have my old Norco Sight, which I ride when riding with other non-Ebike group rides and on solo or Ebike rides I take the SL.
I've even done a couple of rides on the SL with lesser fit riders with no assistance selected and it was fine to ride. I find the Ebike gives me more motivation to ride solo and it's great to go exploring without as much concern of not having the legs to get back.

A ebike motor rebuild expert in Europe I was speaking to yesterday, who I cannot name, he tells me the TQ motors are not what they promise, suffering major heat issues on mass and to avoid atm.

If you can, wait on any TQ equipped bikes for the foreseeable future to see what washes out.

Yes, sometimes it's a good idea not to be an early adopter. Fortunately for me the Levo SL motors are one of the more reliable ones about.

That new Scott Lumen has the TQ motor

So when I was young and dumb about 19, my older brother had just picked up his CB750F2 from the shop after having so work done and wanted me to take for a spin, I'm no its alright. He's like just go up the road and but don't go too hard, remember I said I was young & dumb, so I gave it a good fang up the road, all was going sweet until I was coming into town, at that stage I lived in Redesdale a typical country one horse town.

Anyway as I came around the second last bend on the Bendigo road they believe I clipped a pothole at about 110ish puncturing the rear tyre, the bike slid sideways off the road until it went into the drain, from there it decided to go straight again. There was a driveway directly in my path with a concrete or steel drain pipe running under it, which I hit at about 100km/h launching the bike into the air and somersaulting me and the bike down the road, it tore off the rear wheel, pulled the rear shocks into two.

As I cartwheeled down the road still on the bike, it bent the handle bars with my hands still hanging on dislocating my hand but not my thumb, as it broke the bone in there so the webbing between my thumb to the pointing finger stretched to where my little finger was supposed to be, that's where the rest of my hand started again. I also took an impact directly to my chest snapping my sternum down the center and bursting a crap of capillaries in chest, so I was drowning my own blood. I then became separated from the bike ragdolling down the road, now either between the bike tumble and the road tumble I broke my hip and pelvis in 3 places. Now the dumb part, I was not wearing proper gear, just a muscle shirt, helmet and jeans, so I lost all the skin on my forearms, elbows, hands, knuckles and my back; which the nurses cleaned nicely with sterile water and a toothbrush with no pain meds.

All up I spent 3 weeks in traction, 3 to 4 days in intensive care and the next couple months learning to walk and use my left hand properly. Specialist said I missed it by that much from not being here, he told me to wait as long as possible but it wasn't a question of if, but when I will need a hip replacement. Took 20 years but I had it done as I was missing work, not being able to ride, I was on a walking stick anytime we went anywhere as the arthritis destroyed the bone to the point where it would lock up, so I bit the bullet and had it done. I was out of bed the next day and back at work 4 weeks later, I have been able to race 6 hour endurance races even did a 12 hour, all single speed and mostly rigid plus a crap load of racing with the Geelong club. I have bike packed doing a couple overnighters doing about 200k's for the weekend, so it hasn't held me back much but like any injury I have my good days and bad days. If you are wondering, yeah I still ride motorbikes but these days I wear proper gear, Kevlar jeans, leather jacket etc., oh and I had to pay my brother for his bike as it wasn't insured and at that time I was unlicensed so it wouldn't of mattered.

Sorry for the ramble but yeah it hurt

Wonderful... Ah well let's see how this plays out.
With summer putting it's earrings on and walking down the hallway I might not have long to wait.

Thanks for sharing. Fucking crazy. 19 too. Reckon the walking stick would have been been great for beating the ladies off with all those cool scars :p

My last ebike race there was a new Trek with a pooped TQ motor…apparently the first the shop had seen stop working. There have been a few on the emtb forum with motor issues too but I was hoping it was just a noisy minority.

I have seen a few on that forum too. Hopefully they get on top of it. Specialized was hit big time with the Brose Motor belt failures.

The reason I'm interested in an eBike is because after a 3 hour surf I'm feeling a bit tired and riding up the 3km hill to get back to the car (in national park) can ruin you for the next day. Some of the boyz are riding electric skateboards back up the hill and there have already been a few spills. I already have an Astrix Rook hard tail with board racks so I was looking at one of those front wheel hub motor conversion kits. A couple have coaught me eye

3. or even this thing https://rideignite.com.au/collections/electric-road-bikes/products/electronic-bike-male which comes with a carbon belt.

I need it to be light because there is a section where I need to hike the bike (which will already have a surfboard loaded), so happy to give up suspension if necessary.

I mostly dislike climbing. Other than it being a means to get to the top of a hill, I don't enjoy it at all. Maybe a really well thought out, long steady climb is OK. But otherwise nope, don't enjoy it. Love going downhill though.

Got an eMTB. A big one. 180 front, 160 rear. I've done over 150km on it in a few months, in way less individual rides than I normally would. Literally cannot wipe the smile off my face. Haven't enjoyed MTB riding this much in a couple of decades. Uphills are fun. Downhills are fun. Full-wide-open trails are fun. Tight, twisty-turny trails are fun. Short, sharp, technical, previously impossible pinches are now possible. And fun. Literally every aspect of riding it is fun.

I kept my 29er hardtail, thinking: "I'll give it some love and have it there in case I ever want to ride the old fashioned way again, or enter a race or something..." Fk that. I doubt I'll ever ride another bike again.

I have some in my wrist too as I snapped the scaphoid in half when it dislocated, let’s just say going through customs is fun “please sir step over here”
My motorbiking mates always say why don't you get a motorbike. I was about 20 when I tried one, it was a Suzuki Across 250, a mate owned it and I agreed to show him how to drive a manual car if I could have a spin on the bike. He nearly drove my car up a gutter, I had to pull the handbrake, but he got the hang eventually.

Then I get on the bike, first motorcycle with I've ridden, had gone up and down my street really slow on it one time before to figure out gears and brakes. We're in an industrial area at the back of Blacktown, I do a few laps around the couple of streets we're playing on and then I let it rip. All was well, I was getting the hang of it then I realised I was coming a bit hot to the intersection and lock the back brake as I change down gears, had a sideways moment, and got off the bike. Knowing it would end in pain one day, I never took it up.

Can vouch for the Dillenger kit, good value and light, son has been running one for a while. That Ride Ignite one on special looks like bloody good value though.

huskier headed gent
I have never been the fittest person and with a busy job, big commute and two young kids I just don't get the time to get out there. As a result I would avoid joining group rides for fear of holding everyone up. Since getting the ebike I will happily join both acoustic and ebike rides with mates and strangers knowing that I can just enjoy the ride.
Also find with the ebike that I get the same workout because as soon as I reach the top I just turn it around and head back down with no pause at the top while I fend off a heart attack. Living near Bright and not really being into shuttles it is just the right tool for the job. Seeing more and more ebikes at Mystic every year and it's not going to slow down with the new user pays setup.
