What's everyone doing with their wallet, phone and keys on a ride?

I'm sick of wearing a camelback every ride just to carry my wallet, phone and keys and I don't like having them in my shorts pockets, both for fear of losing them and them rattling and bobbing up and down every pedal stroke.

Plenty of straps and mounting gadgets now available for tubes, co2 and tools but what about the other stuff we carry on rides?

I have 2 saddle bags 3 bottle bags and 2 camelback bags on my table at the moment.

Part of the problem is my mtb (like others) can only fit one bottle. This restricts the amount of fluid I can take but forces me to choose water or tools. Saddle bags are crap for mtb but I do have the Mondo which is firmer than usual with the clip on mount not swinging around too much. It'sstill shit though and for mtb I prefer not to have anything where it picks up the most dirt.

Next on the list is to start looking at bikepacking options. Thinking about a top tube bag for phone keys and tools. My mate has this on their do it all hardtail (bikepacking and singletrack). Seems to work well.

The real problem is phones are massive these days with 6 inch screens being the norm. I blame porn culture for this.

Wallet stays in the glovebox (or at home if I'm on the roadie) and I pocket my phone, driver's license and car key. If I need money I've got Apple Pay, if I knock myself out I have my license for someone to identify me, and I've set my keys up so that my car key and other keys are separate and joined with a little Niteize s-binder on the occasion I want them all together (rarely).

I'm really picky about shorts though because of pocketing my phone so only buy shorts where there's a phone pocket to the rear of the side seam so the phone sits flat against the side/rear of your thigh instead of getting in the way up front.

That said, if you're not keen on pocketing your phone for whatever reason, I also have one of these which I use on longer rides or if I'm riding with the dog and want an extra water bottle/have other shit to carry. Yes it's very #enduro but it's small, light, comfortable and pretty good value for $50 inc bottle.

Phone goes in the side zip pocket. More wary of it erupting into flames in a stack like happeNed to that fella in the the US a couple of years ago than breaking it. I’ve stacked big about 6 times and phone has never been damaged. I make a habit of turning the screen against the leg though.
Wallet is usually piffed under the front seat. ( yeah I know, they’ll never think to look there)
and keys get thrown under a bunch of dirty old straps in the back of the Ute tray. They’d really have to search for them.

Most places I ride I feel pretty safe to do that. Maybe I’m just lazy.

I leave it is zip lock bag with a credit card and $20 or so.
I take it in my waist bag for short rides or backpack for long rides. I just put it in my jersey pocket while on the roadie. I don't need a big screened phone for those reasons.

Wallet is at home, or in glovebox if I've driven somewhere. Phone in one pocket, keys in the other. Sometimes take just car key off and put that in a jersey pocket.

Got one of these for longer gravel / adventure rides - looks good on both gravel and hardtail https://roadrunnerbags.us/products/burrito-supreme-handle-bar-bag

Hardly use the hydration packs these days, but they can be useful for longer rides too.

Good question, I was in the same boat and completely got sick of it. Now if I'm driving to a ride, I now only carry my car key, licence and one credit card. These fit easily in my shorts. Wallet, bunch of keys etc stay home.

I don't understand the wallet thing. I mean most trails are isolated loops that don't go near anything you could use a credit card for.

I also shove a $20 note in the bag. Doubles as a puncture kit hack.

  • Wallet in car centre console
  • Phone in pocket (screen to the inside/leg)
  • Car key only on small carabiner in pocket (detaches from rest of keys which I leave in car)
In the very rare chance I need to pay for something I just use paypass on my phone. In the event i'm carrying more stuff on a longer ride (tube, CO2, zipties, medkit etc) or want to carry a bottle, I use one of these.

Me too they're great. Saw @creaky with one and got one. The bottle stays in secure and can carry everything I need

They're handy when you're out for a while and can't refill a bottle, for sure.

On the roadie or an XC ride I wear pocketed jerseys and shove the phone, licence, credit card and keys (if I drive) in a clippy.
If I'm headed just for a trail ride without pockets then I have a frame bag on my Ibis that I put tools and all the above in.

Race Face Rip Strip under the jersey.
How do people find these waist straps? I find that when I heat up the first thing I do is make sure my jersey is loose so I can get some air flow going.
I wore a back strap during a back injury one summer at work and I found it miserable. These look similar.

@Ultra Lord just leaves them on the ute bumper bar. Works for him!
Depends where you ride. At the Youyangs I probably even forget to lock the car most of the time.
Last Cressy race day I rode my bike on the morning from the car to the race village, hung it up on a pole and went and track Marshalled all day.
When I finally got back in the arvo there it was safe and sound. Mtb people are 99.99999 percent decent.
It’s maybe the rare blow in you have to worry about.

Phone that has a cover in my right pocket, keys in my left. That said I do not understand the hate little saddle bags get. Cinch it tight with the tools you want inside and you always have them with you and it is far mreo confortable (and the weight is low down) compared to a bum bag or waist belt. Methinks its a fashion thing.
