Wheel Build Advice Thread

Anyone know where to get cheap DT swiss rims now?
Looks like the main sites are all geo-blocked.
Tune Cycles do some insane build prices, such as EX511 with DT350s for $900 shipped. I'm guessing they are grey importing the parts and wonder if you asked them nicely they could sell you just the rims?

Or... just buy a complete wheelset with them and sell the hubs you don't need.

I kind of like planning out wheels and building them, even if I would probably be better off just buying them complete. They do seem to do pretty good prices.
Not a bad idea to ask if they will sell the rims alone, I might ask.

I'm the same as you, but for many rims it just seems to make no economic sense to buy rims only. They must price them that high on purpose.

I'd be all over that if I didn't own a set of non-standard wheels already.

Apparently the FR541 are a bit stronger with little weight penalty.

Just checked, works out about the same as aus prices when including shipping.
$188 per rim (XM421) VS $199 at pushys.
Something funky going on with their shipping calculator. I’ve got 2 wheels and some other bits and pieces in my cart showing shipping $46, if I add one rim it jumps to $86 and then keeps jumping for every extra rim I add. And yet if I add an entire extra wheel it only jumps $10.

Yea that doesn't sound right, Ill email them..

Following on from my contribution in the f-wit thread, I have started my first wheel building attempt (technically second after almost 20 years).

I've laced the spokes as per the Park Tools video, but not sure if the spoke lengths I'm using are correct, and potentially may need to contribute to the f-wit thread again...

It's a Hope Pro 2 Evo 40T hub (12x142) and DT Swiss XR361 rim (29" 32 hole). I'm using 293mm left side and 292mm right side DT Swiss Comp spokes with 12mm 14g prolock brass nipples and the PHR nipple washes.

One of the nipples threaded (and will get a replacement next week) so haven't 'zero'ed all the nipples, though I have zero'ed the first two sets of spokes (ie 8 on each side), thought it'll be a time saver given I was just using a screwdriver from the tyre side.

Just checking if I am on the right track as the spokes look a bit strange...

Sorry to have to tell you, but the spokes on both sides look too long. The fact that you can't see the nipples and the spokes are very bowed is a bit of a giveaway. The lacing looks OK though. Just check that when you worked out the spoke length, it was using a two cross pattern, rather than three cross. Hard to tell from the pic? It may just be that you have two crossed them, rather than three crossed?

Cheers thank you I think I did 2 cross, not 3 cross... Will give it another go, that was already my second attempt :)

By my own calculations, LHS spoke length is: 294mm and RHS is 293mm, based on a three cross pattern.
So you should be fine with the spokes you have, even if they are 1mm short on both sides.
If you find that when you re-lace it, the spokes are starting to get a bit short to the nipples, press down on the spoke at the hub, to flatten it a little. This might give you the extra 0.3mm you need. Alternatively, if you have 14mm nipples, use them to give you the reach and additional strength.
Make sense???

I think this is looking better? Most nipples have been tightened to not have any spoke thread showing

And just checking that I have built the rim the right way round with the offset? Might be beginners luck as I never considered it when starting...

Yep as Ducky said, you have put the offset on the wrong side.
On the rear wheel the drive side flange is closer to the centreline of the wheel, so the offset is supposed to account for this by shifting the virtual centreline of the rim away from the drive side. this make the lateral angles on both sides more even.
On a front wheel you would orientate the dish in the way that you have shown because it is the brake side flange that is closer to the centreline.
Unfortunately that means you have to completely unlace and start again.
Hey, at least you'll only make these mistakes once, next time it will be a dream run!!
