Why I don't ride road anymore

Theyre still banging about fewer car parks means less business... Such crap.

Newcastle has ripped out a lot of car parks to make way for the hugely successful light rail and explosion of apartments buildings. My work is bang in the epicenter, with a light rail stop at the door...

Every shift sees a barrage of people hating on the very well publicised long standing lack of parking. Pointing out that there is a sizable empty carpark at the start of the light rail line falls on deaf ears.

As if cyclists don't use restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops. You're more likely to notice different shops on your bike also. I'm sure they said in the piece that there was ample parking around the road, it's just walking a couple of 100m is so hard these days.

I think i saw another study that shops actually do better when cars are excluded for the reasons you say - people are there for longer. Its becomes a centre for people and not just a one shop destination.

If the park isn't right at the door...is there really a park?
Have you lived in Mildura too?

A few years back the monthly Craft Market nearly went under. They saved it by moving it out of the spacious open air mall, and on to the footpaths of the adjoining street because the traders were too lazy to take their gear into the mall to sell, and the buyers were too lazy to walk the 1 block from their car into the mall to buy.

We are doomed to boil alive on this shit hole planet, no matter how hard we try. I nominate that we stop sending haaaaaaaakers and his associates on international business flights in a futile attempt to achieve anything other than a funky Dutch rudder. One to which none of us have been invited I might add.

Probably Austroads review of case studies from around 10 years ago. Something like a 2-4x greater spending generated from bicycle parking.

There was a new multi-story car park built in Devonport which is 500m from the city mall. People were calling for the mall to be reopened to cars because there was no parking close by. When you point out about the new car park you always get the reply "what about the elderly or disabled". they weren't elderly or disabled, just lazy but use that as an example of why you need to park directly opposite the shop you plan to go to.

Is this just the new natural selection? I wonder how many will be around when I retire now that they have raised the pension age.....

Still one billion times better than any biodome the Musk eventually gets built on Mars, but, sadly, I understand your point of view.

There is still value in annoying some of the offenders. The UN only have the power to mildly irritate them of course, but it’s still worth the effort. Sort of…

Pretty sure you can't face both civil and criminal proceedings for the same actions. But perhaps this incident contains multiple actions that are all open for some time on court

Can you post the full article from behind paywall?

Former AFL star Glenn Archer has admitted careless driving after knocking down a cyclist while overtaking him on a suburban Melbourne road.

The former North Melbourne captain and premiership player was driving a truck and towing a trailer and excavator when he overtook the cyclist on Rosanna Road in Heidelberg on January 11.

When traffic in front of him built up, Archer merged back into the left lane of the dual lane road but hadn’t yet cleared the cyclist’s path.
The man was knocked off his bike onto the kerb, and his bike became tangled in the trailer’s wheel arch. Archer failed to stop, claiming he didn’t realise he’d hit the man.

But the incident was captured on dashcam footage by another driver, and included branding for Archer’s tree lopping company which allowed police to track him down.
Paramedics took the cyclist to hospital where he was treated for three broken ribs, swelling to one knee, neck pain and grazing over his body.

Archer pleaded guilty in Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to a charge of careless driving.

The victim, who was in court, said he suffers constant headaches and flashbacks and said his life will never be the same again.

The man had to cancel a family trip to Europe and said his life now consists of surgery and rehabilitation multiple times a day.
Archer told police said he had “absolutely zero idea” that he had hit someone.
“If I knew I hit someone, I’m definitely stopping,” he said.
After watching footage of the collision he admitted his driving could definitely be considered careless.

Archer’s lawyer told the court his client is on the road all day, every day as the owner of his tree lopping business.

He apologised to the cyclist through his lawyer, having been discouraged by police from reaching out personally.
Archer was convicted and fined $1500. The offence carries a maximum penalty of $2200.
“It has had a considerable impact on the victim, albeit that it may have been unintentional,” magistrate Timothy Hoare said.

Archer kicked 143 goals in 311 games for the Kangaroos between 1992 and 2007.
