Winter jacket

Delazy

Got a new bike!
Sooo it's getting rather chilli down here in tassie, can't bring myself to suffer the cold nor stay inside in the warmth...looking for a good value winter jacket for trails...ideally something breathable so it doesn't turn into a portable sauna...suggestions?

I'm in melbourne, not as cold

but i wear merino long sleeve, long sleeve fox top and if really cold ~2deg gore tex jacket or gillet

Tassie is milder than much of south Vic....
I have a kathmandu goretex shell. That, over a thermal layer, and I nether sweat, or shiver, in Ballarats winter.

Unless it's raining I wouldn't go with a full length jacket, as I'm yet to find one where you don't end up feeling like being in a sauna. My outfit for the past few frosty mornings of 7:00am commutes have been thermal bib tights over knicks, a merino long sleeved t-shirt with a barrier vest over the top, plus gloves, headband and shoe covers. Enough to keep me warm, yet still allowing airflow to prevent sweating and steaming up.

Had a good look at the Kathmandu range of gore tex while on lunch today...too many options and obviously not cheap! Trying to avoid cashing out if I can but feel it's a case of you get what you pay for in this scenario...

The North Face. I bought a jacket for riding in the winter months and it's awesome.I spent years trying to find something that kept me warm but didn't trap all the sweat in and make me cold! Ironically, I got the jacket in Hawaii and it was half the price of Australian stores so shop around. I can't find the exact listing but it's similar to this with a hood. It repels water (rain drops, water splashes etc), it has lots of spots to put things you may need to carry and it's comfortable.

I got a jacket from Aldi, it's not too bad for the price $60 it has a thermal inner shell and a water proof outer shell, granted I get a bit sweaty in it but for the price I'm not complaining

I get away with a basic thermal as a base layer, long sleeve merino jersey and Netti windshell jacket for keeping warm on most rides. I'm getting a Bontrager Lithos Stormshell jacket through work for cheap for bike-packing/camping duties when it decides to rain non-stop and I need to keep dry. Will be able to report back in a few weeks.

I found if I wear my windproof vest/gillet over a base layer and then covered by a long sleeve jersey it traps more heat and lets less wind in than if I wear it as the outer layer. Not that it gets too cold where I ride generally but it works nicely at around 3C.
