XL or XXL road bike frame?

Hi guys,

time for a new road bike frame for me.
I was going to buy the Willier Gran Turismo from Torpedo 7 but it looks like they ran out of the XXL frame sizes. I thought this was a very good deal at about $1500. I think the style of frame would suit me well.

Can anyone reccomend any good frames of a similar stye for about the same price. I would love to find a cool steel or Ti bike.

Must be XL or XXL i.e. 595 TT or bigger.

Cheers!

Kona made a really nice lugged steel frame - similar to a steel colon-ah-go called a Kapu - i think. Came in large sizes for big beefie beautiful blokes. Otherwise Specialised do XXL sizes and sell out older stock at good prices. Being XXL myself it can be a curse at times but most manufacturers have big stiff sitting around because there are only four of us in the country that will fit.

Thanks for the reply JD. I actually sorted out a deal on a 2012 Specialized Roubaix yesterday. Just deciding to pull the trigger or not...

Not much about this bike not to like!

I ride a Kuota kebel in an xxl size. Great bike, it's a hell of a lot stiffer than a roubaix (if you're a big bloke you'll hate a roubaix, they can't support heavy guys without turning into a noodle).

Where abouts do you live? If you're in Sydney in can hook you up with some sweet deals on the kuotas (blatant plug).

Otherwise Scott make some great bikes for big guys.

Hmmmm, interesting. I'm looking at pulling the trigger on a roadie too. Definitely an XXL but they're pretty thin on the ground. Originally had a nice steel frame (61cm) I was going to build up but the super short wheelbase is less appealling. Also the idea of riding something made from a bastard concoction of bits of scaffolding and rust is fine for disposable commuters, less so for something capable of 70-80km/h.

So.... what other recommendations do people have for bigger bikes? Had a very brief go on a Trek Madone 5 (62cm) that felt pretty awesome and also a standover on a 61cm Willier something something (it was red) that felt good too from a geometry standpoint. Are the European brands generally smaller?

One of my bigger, more powerful mates swears by the Trek lifetime frame warranty. Frame #4 has just failed and frame #5 is approved and en route. They have all been replaced for free, just cracks so far no catastrophic failures.

Do it. I just got myself a Roubaix last November and it's awesome.
I love it.

It feels tight and detailed and quick as, but is comfy too. Corners like a bastard and looks nice too.
Love it. Just buy it.

I'm a bit concerned about the comment of the bike being a noodle, are you XL sized?

So this is the 5th frame he will be on now?? Think that's reason to steer clear!! Good on em for warranting it though.

yeah 5 frames doesnt make it very comforting - collate all the downtime, off the bike, waiting from replacements and then building it up again - painful. I am a big guy and have owned only the one alloy road bike and it cracked in three places - I will go steel in the future and be fat and comfortable

I was very tempted to get a Surly Pacer.

Didn't mean to scare you! But big guys weigh the bikes down more and put more power through them. So something that's stiff for a 70kg guy on a 54cm frame won't be anywhere near as stiff if you're 100kg + and on a bigger bike (the bigger bikes flex more in the first place). I'm 6'5" but a complete rake (80kg). I've got a mate the same height but 30kg more he reckons his Scott foil is a comfy bike, but every ride I've had on its been bone shattering.

If you want steel check out the soma smoothie.

and don't neglect the wheels. You'll go through those as well if you just buy stock. Consider hand-build 36-spokers with solid rims.

That solution worked for me, but then my alloy bikes were (early) cannondales.

Hi Oct

Yeah the Surlys, Singular, Soma or try and find an old Kona Kapu. Solid wheelset and the best running gear you can find and you would have a solid, reliable and great riding bike. It wont be the lightest in the peleton but you will be the coolest.
