VIC Yarra Trails - Candlebark Park (Hans)

Parks have authorised the Candlebark area as a multiuse (walking, running, orienteering, cycling) bush trail network and approve trail works YTT do on that basis.

That also provides some constraints in the scope of what we can do. If it were an authorised dedicated MTB network like Youies and Lysty, there are many more options on design and construction possible.

To date the trail work done by the YTT group has only had positive comments by Parks, riders and other users.

EDIT: no r in multiuse

Except for the trail you named after yourself right?
There are trails named after builders on many trail networks (eg Hans, Travs Diamond).

I doubt if any were at the instruction of that particular person.

For the record, in regards GSB, that whole naming thing was a bit of a joke from the Parks Ranger who came up with it long before it was ever mentioned on a forum (or Facebook).

Parks was going to close that whole section and put riders up the main management road. George met with and pushed the local Ranger to replace trail with trail and he kept calling it George’s sensitive bits – as a stir. He has a sense of humour. We cut that new trail and the name stuck. Everyone else takes it in context and with the cheeky affection that it was meant to have.

Trailwork Session this Saturday

Hello fellow trail enthusiasts,

We have a brief window of opportunity this Saturday morning to perform some much needed trail work on the Candlebark Park trail network.

10am start please and we will probably go for several hours. Feel free to come and go as you want though.

Meet at Candlebark Park - Fitzsimons Lane Carpark next to the Yarra river bridge - Eastern side of bridge. Car Park accessible from both sides of Fitzsimons Lane via a loop road that goes under bridge.

We will go through a brief safety talk first up and sign the volunteer form so everyone is covered with Parks Vic insurance.

Bring gloves, safety glasses, sturdy shoes, sun screen (fingers crossed) and drinking water. Parks Vic normally supply tools however this time we're running the trail session without Parks involvement on the day so please bring a shovel, rake, McLeod (fire rake) or your favourite trail tool. The scope of work will be more reshaping works to take care of a few low wet areas, some rock work and other light digging. It will also be an opportunity for those of us who would like to have greater involvement with the management of the trail to be exposed to what's involved.

We also tend to have a few laughs as well so be prepared.....

If you are going to attend, please let me know at gc@yarratrails.com.au so that we have an idea of numbers and Parks high vis vests that we need to bring.

Thanks and see you on Saturday!

As we go into summer, there are several spots that require work to add a bit more fun and MTB challenge.

We have locked the following dates in with Parks Vic. so if you would like to be involved, lock them in.

- This Tuesday 15th November - 6pm until dusk or when the mozzies drain us completely.
- Sunday 20th 10am-1pm
- Wednesday 14th December 6pm until dusk

You may notice the weekday evening sessions. With 60 volunteers, some have regular commitments on weekends so let's mix it up and make it easier for everyone. We'll send reminders for the Nov 20th and Dec 14th sessions.

For this Tuesday evening, 6pm sharp meet at Candlebark Park - Fitzsimons Lane Carpark next to the Yarra river bridge - Eastern side of bridge. Car Park accessible from both sides of Fitzsimons Lane via a loop road that goes under bridge.

We will go through a brief safety talk first up and sign the volunteer form so everyone is covered with Parks Vic insurance. Then it's off to the trails.

Bring gloves, safety glasses, sturdy shoes, sun screen (fingers crossed) and drinking water. Thanks and see you on Tuesday evening!

Regards
George

Some great work from such enthusiastic volunteers! A mix of old and new volunteers for a good work session, laughs, and chatting with the various park users out there. A hiking club, riders, photographers and families with young children riding trail for the first time.

We had the pleasure of several members of Cycling Victoria Off Road jump in to volunteer as well. Great day indeed.

The next scheduled work session is an evening one during the week - Wednesday 14th December 6pm until dusk.

If you are going to attend that evening, please let me know at mailto:gc@yarratrails.com.au so that we have an idea of numbers and Parks high vis vests that we need to bring.

Hi RB,

I reckon you would get more volunteers if you could work on something alittle sexier. I realise the general maintenance is required but it would be great to offer something new in Candlebark. What about a flow trail down the power lines or over the back in the paddock that goes down towards the Orchid/ main trail/ river. Despite is legality, the Dentist has held up well surely you could replicate it elsewhere.
Be happy to help. Anyone else keen....................................................????

We have approval to realign the open section under power lines heading to lower switchbacks and the dam run from top switchbacks to leaky dam. Both could include some small rollers/doubles, both need focus on flow. There is also in-principle support for a longer flow trail using full area under powerlines and natural features such as the remanent dams but we need to get approved trail done first. That needs more people rolling up, both for design input and labor/ownership. And yes, Dentist is a great trail. That kind of input would be awesome.

Workdays are last Sunday (morning) in month. I plan work program based on how many/who have signed up on FB page. If there are enough committed would love to focus on trail building/mods for rest of year.
