ha ha you're no slouch on that either - you know once I was nearly at the top definite KOM missed pedal and rolled down the side like a large boulder.
I saw you were near the top of the tree on that segment!
Yes it's a bitchin' climb! One mistake and you get the enjoyment of going backwards :)

btw if you were going to make up a YTs dirty dozen climb guide this would be one, monument another, bush hut, up to nowhere, the mega steep at kew boathouse have you or anyone gone up the climb that's normally a descent with switch backs down next to Johnson st bridge that finishes under bridge where you go up steps to do monument loop?

At the top of my head I can think of 6.....

Monument Climb - http://app.strava.com/segments/631691
Climb from under Eastern Freeway Bridge up to Yarra Blvd - http://app.strava.com/segments/911744
Mega Steep Climb - http://app.strava.com/segments/638332
1 in 6 (forget 1 in 20) - http://app.strava.com/segments/782191
MTB Climb Next to Rosanna Golf Club - http://app.strava.com/segments/805777
Rehab Centre dirt climb - http://app.strava.com/segments/1699477

The "Up to Nowhere" is a good one but I think the "GPS drift" tends to ruin the leaderboard. I did that climb in my big chainring (a 38) once because my front derailleur was caked in mud - it stung the legs a bit :)

the Bush Hut singletrack climb would be a good one as well (although I don't think I have done it up - ridden down it many times if that counts?!). I know the climb from the Johnson St steps to the top of the Boullie - haven't gone up it in a very long time (ie at least 1.5 years?!). You could perhaps also include "Starpickets Ascent" in that lot too :)

The Monument Climb is prolly the best of the lot. Rocky with a challenging entry point, it's hard to maintain a good rhythm as the rocky-ness can knock you off your line at any time. Plus the steepness means body position and technique plays a big role in climbing it quickly.

It's not dirt but The Wall out at the old Templestowe hill climb course is supposed to be the steepest paved road in Australia. It's only short but is very steep and smashes my heart rate through the roof. It's also banked which tries to pull you into the inside.
It took me quite a few goes to nail it but now I can ride it successfully most of the time.

Thanks for the info, I'll have a look around for the ST next time I'm out that way. Is there anything on the Fairfield Boathouse side of the river?
There certainly used to be, haven't ridden it for a while though, along and up to the fly-fishing ponds, then the bit from the ovals to the Merri creek.

Great post. We should get a loop that has each of the climbs in it (ok, maybe not Rosanna). It would be a great training ride.

Am sure I can come up with some loop :)
Just had an initial idea...

Go up the Monument Climb
Ride through the Monument singletrack (through the midde of the teardrop)
Down the boat house escape
Go up the Mega Steep Climb
Ride the Bush hut singletrack
Go anywhere you want and go up Climb from under Eastern Freeway Bridge up to Yarra Blvd
turn left and then head up the Rehab Centre dirt climb
Head back down towards the Pipe Bridge, go down Starpickets Ascent
Go up the 1 in 6 (forget 1 in 20)

Done!

Looks like a plan. A good plan. Now if it would only stop raining for a bit! It's turning the only ride-able bit of the Yarra to crap.

thanks cheesoy great list and links .... kudos that you are on many top 10s.

Yep monument climb is probably the king maker due the steepness and technical challenge. Looks like the climb I posted from lower ST up to the Boulie (Climb from under Eastern Freeway Bridge up to Yarra Blvd) has an average grade of 18.5% where monument is 14.2%. of course monument has the rocks where climb under eastern has the very thin climb line.

there's also the climb up to the crit loop as part of monument loop - the old road access it looks like to me.

the only other climbs I can think of within reach are on Han's loop 'switch backs'.

this one certainly does hurt, especially with the water bars and loose rocks ;)
Not a pretty climb, but a tough one. I always aim to do it, but by the time I ride out to Hans, do a loop or two, I can't face the ride further out to then do it. Unfit, time deficient bastard!

And I'm curious. With the bucketing down this week, where are people planning to ride on the weekend? I need some ideas! Anything ride-able without hopping in the car?

I guess I could do repeats of the climb above :nono:

Cheers,
