Year 12 2010!

Alright. Thanks for that mate! Helped a lot. I think i'll try and stick methods out until Mid-year at least and reevaluate from there, also, as i've no clue what i want to do after school, methods would keep my options open to more uni courses, but part of my plan as i don't know what i want to do, is to have as much fun at school as possible, whilst trying to keep a healthy enter!
I did methods last year and am doing further this year. Methods, although being hard, I managed to pass pretty easily without (foolishly) doing any homework. However further feels pretty pointless. I'm wishing I had done methods.

If you can, keep up with methods. It will certainly give you more possibilities. You could do specialist next year if you wanted too.

As for job possibilities, grab a jobs guide and flick through the back until you find something you think sounds cool. It's not like when you were young when you only dreamt of possibilities. You now have a realistic opportunity to do them. Think back to that job you always wanted to do; and most of all, "Carpe Diem."

How's everyone going?

All classwork is done for me, just exams to go.
Got my VCD and Art folios done well, and really happy with them. Media, Further Math doing quite well. English is another story.
On holidays now, but got 1.5 weeks of class left, which is mainly all revision and lulz.

I remember reading a study guide or something at school a while ago, which suggested you emulate your school timetable during the holidays (i.e. 6 hours per day, breaks when you would normally have lunch time) and then the 4 hours of homework per night..

Fuck that...

Realistically you only need to do 3/4 a day. Make sure you get exercise, relax and eat healthy as well. Only you know how much study needs to be done, if your sketchy on something, study that. X amount of hours of study per day isn't proportional to marks. Also you guys know your best bet is just to do as many of the previous exams as possible - For the HSC I did (well tried to..) 2 exams per day, make sure over the holiday period you match what exams you need to practice, don't neglect a subject, but don't spend all your time on a subject your good at. Look at your exam timetable and if you have say a week between exams, you can give it a slightly lower priority, etc etc.

Know your syllabus, know whats in the course, understand the concept, it's all pretty simple. Don't spend 10 hours a day, that will just fuck you up, and result in realistically not really doing anything. If you start getting the itches, go outside and hit the beach for an hour/ride bike round block etc etc. On the other hand don't get into the habit of doing 6 mins of work, "Hey, I've been working hard, I deserve a break", then go waste your time. If your not going to actually study, then dont sit in your room doing nothing. AND BY ANY MEANS POSSIBLE, DO NOT HAVE FACEBOOK/FARKIN/INTERNET WITHIN REACH!

Good luck, I was there last year, 'tis shit.

Right this is coming from someone who has been there and done that. The syllabus has probably changed a bit within the few years of me completing my H.S.C but the concept of study is all the same.

There is no set regime that will suit everyone. Without sounding smug I did SFA and still managed to do alright. The H.S.C exams themselves are a piss load easier than the trials or any other prelim examinations.

My advice is, learn your shit by re-doing past exams. You'll find that by doing so you'll come across atleast a few of these questions in the final exams. I'll also recommend you fuck the 8 hours a day bullshit off also. Those expectations are completely unrealistic, whoever is telling you to do 8 hours of study a day has lost a grip on reality. Sure it may be a breeze for those who are that way inclined but it is a massive struggle for those of you who are like me and would undoubtedly create unnecessary stress.

Anyway, relax and good luck.

Totally agree Breaka. Thanks for the advice.
Especially with my subjects, not overly study/text book based:
  • Further Math - Fairly confident, we've got calculators and notes for both exams. So I'll just keep doing practice exams for that.
  • English - Not great at but quite consistent, will just do practice essays and whatnot, re-read books.
  • Visual Communication and Design - Very confident, not all that much to study as it's a mostly a practical exam, will just do past exams.
  • Studio Art - Entirely theory based exam, which I've not bad at but not overly confident either, once again, practice exams.
  • Media - Relatively confidant, but I'm going to need to pump a lot of things back in my head from earlier in the year.
But yeah, none of my subjects had mid years, so it's mostly just revision of earlier stuff, and doing past exams. Just got to get more motivated to study, so many distractions.

It was first semester of uni exams this year and I have definitely learnt many things.

Main thing I will do differently this semester is study less.

For the first couple of days of SWOTVAC I studied around 10-12 hours. But by the time my exam rolled around I felt 'burnt out.'

Eg. Was on 92% going into my Maths exam, came out with a 5 (65-75%). I reckon i put 20 hours into my maths study, yet if your not good enough on the day.... tough titties.

I also agree with Breaka; from my experience, it is important to set yourself something constructive to do outside of study time. I personally chose to study at the local library (less distractions) and taught myself to skate in my breaks. Also, being in the middle of town gave me plenty of options for a nice lunch/coffee, making the whole ordeal seem much more bearable. By doing this, I found that i was able to do a pretty solid 6-7 hours a day while not feeling overly stressed. Once you get started, it feels good to be productive and using your time well - definitely recommend the library!!

Fwiw I did mostly humanities based subjects (bar NSW general maths) so I wrote notes/essays which required a longer attention span than i could muster at home...

Yeah it is so easy to over study.
Also, from what I have read, core skills test (QLD) sounds so much better than what all the other states are doing!
I'm currently Studying
Maths A
English
Graphics
Technology Studies
Industrial Studies
Computer Programming
