You know you're getting old when ...

YKYGO when you worry about your kids starting to drive themselves around because you remember the dumb shit you did when you first got your licence.
Correct!!!
though my daughter who is now 18 and driving, is a lot more sensible than me at that age (shakes head).….I would really be freaking out if she was driving my first car - Datsun 120y

My Son is the same. Definitely not a hoon like I was at his age. He just got 3 years free licence renewal for getting through his 3 years of Provisional driving without an offence. I lost my licence in less than a year of getting it. 😂

Don't worry too much, most of us lived through it and learnt from the experience.

I dunno if modern cars are safer. They certainly don't make safer drivers anyway.

We rented a modern SUV on recent trip to NZ. The amount of driver aids causing buzzers sounding, taking control of my steering and braking inputs etc... It made me both irritated and tired/inattentive at the same time. I was able to drive at ridiculous speeds through the mountains, but it felt like driving a numb, soulless cloud.

Was glad to be back in my own ride with manual shifter, no traction/stability control, no reversing sensors, with just ABS to keep my brake pedal in check.

I was testing the self drive limits of the rental Kia Sportage I had through the hills, worked out I could eat a bag of chips through most corners over 80kmh, but anything signed less than that it would beep and actually stop steering mid corner and want to send you into the bushes.
Can definitely develop some bad habits very quickly.

I will try the chips next time!

The radar cruise control was hilarious. In a few sections of sweeping corners I basically held the gas pedal down and took my hand off the wheel. It steered itself using the lane markers and kept a constant distance from the car in front.

Got my 16 year old learning currently. Despite the yowls of 'manuals won't exist in ten years time' from his mother (such things were also said almost 30 years ago when I was learning) I have insisted that he get a manual licence so went and booked a block of lessons in a dual control car to get him kickstarted. We also acquired a little old two door Echo off a mate figuring his sister isn't far behind and it would be a good cheap learner drive for both of them. First time I jumped in it with him we go to take off on our driveway which is on a slope. There's a panicked "Dad, what's going on?' when she starts rolling backwards with the clutch depressed. Turns out the dual control car has a hill start function. What's the fuckin' point in forking out for those lessons then?!

I still remember my first solo drive. Dropped my mum off at work in her car. I think I made it a further 200m before I needed to pull a u-turn so pulled the handbrake like in the movies 😄
My eldest son gets his learners next year!

90% of P platers around here drive well over the speed limit. I guess having what 6 speed cameras that's both fixed and mobile and a distinct lack of cops on the road it's anything goes.

One sprint I was gasbagging with the starter while the track was being cleared. Then forgot to switch the nannies off. Even ac was on. That was a very interesting lap. Came to a complete stop mid chicane when the radar saw no clear way through the tyre barriers.

pretty much every where i go with the kid the last 2.5 years he's been driving. somehow today was the first time we had to stop for fuel. makes sense as i drive an EV but still a bit wierd, how does he not know this after a few hundred driving hours

Driver aids are a pita apart from radar cruise control which is a god send on longer trips.

That said it's annoying as fuck when you gently approach a dawdler and you realise you too are doing 15kph under the speed limit.

Yeah, I've got caught out with that before. lol

My take on radar cruise is that if you can't keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, then you shouldn't be driving full stop. Drivers should be able to do this cognitively.

We don't need radar cruise basically enabling inattentive drivers.

It's not about keeping a safe distance, it's about not having my ankle flexed on the accelerator for hours on end. Non-XL people don't know how lucky they are when it comes to driver comfort as far as legs and feet are concerned.

It's still a weird feeling, even when I know it's going to happen. cruising along at the speed limit and then the car suddenly loses power.
To save having to cancel the cruise control you can just lightly press the accelerator and it won't slow down when you come up to a slower car in a dual lane situation. I find it the adaptive cruise good on the highway.

Adaptive CC is only in my old man's car. I still have to pay more attention everywhere, but it's a big step up to have cruise control, as my previous car didn't, and was also a manual. Manual's great for the twisty roads, but auto with cruise control FTW everywhere else.

What does cruise control have to do with having your ankle flexed?
