You know you're getting old when ...

What does cruise control have to do with having your ankle flexed?

I can use radar cruise control to keep a consistent and safe distance without needing to alter cruise control all the time, or worse still, maintain my speed by keeping my foot on the accelerator for hundreds of km.

You know you are getting old when you are going to a mates funeral tomorrow...and early onset dementia is what killed him. Mad climber, skier, canyoner and cyclist plus an all round smart dude. Five years later...gone. He was still riding a little over two years ago.
Horrible way to exit, sorry to hear. A good reminder to get out and enjoy what we can while we can.

It was definitely shit for his family, quite a bit shit for the rest of us but not so shit for our mate since, while he was often frustrated by his minds failings, he was never able to dwell on it. I'm learning these days to always look to the positive. More so since I'm by far the youngest of my riding bunch...

One thing that does suck about getting old is the fact that more people you know die. But in your mates case I agree, it would not be something you would want to drag on for years just slowly loosing your mind.:(

I've lost 4 friends 58-62 years old in the last 2 years. All massive heart attack. All died before they hit the ground. That's the way I want to go. Sorry for your loss.

That's really no age at all, so sorry to hear that.

Condolences.

That's scary, probably something I fear just because I get senior's moments every now and then, it's on the tip of my tongue just can't get the words out. Usually someone's name I haven't seen for a while, but sometimes it's words too like anecdote, Pallister, Parks or a bloke I know called Ian. Also watched my ex's mother go with Alzheimer's it wasn't nice and it wasn't fair - probably the worst part about it. I have a mate who has been robbed of everything by adancing Parkinson's. He should be enjoying his retirment surfing but no longer can.

I'm the same and I wonder what I'll be like in 10 or so years time.

It's not a magic bullet, but giving your brain a workout can apparently help eg learning a new language, & varying your routine. Also supplements like Alpha GPC daily are helpful. I used to get crushing migrane headaches every so often. since taking Alpha GPC, haven't had one for a number of years. It's also supposed to be useful for maintaining/enchancing cognitive function. I get my Mum to take it daily. I notice the difference when she has missed a day or two, because we ran out etc.

The really important thing is to never ever live in fear. Ever. Max never did. Neither should the rest of us.

Shit happens. We don't have to like it. But hating it or fearing it doesn't make it go away. Embrace it then kick it in the nuts...whilst accepting that immortality doesn't exist.

Irrational fears, fear of the unknown or what might happen tomorrow, sure but sometimes when the surf is good and you see fins (triangles not curved) gliding about as the sun is going down that fear is telling you not to be unwise.

A good friend once said to me "the biggest regrets we have in life are not the things we've done but the things we didn't do." I think I have lived up to that challenge. Orthopaedic surgeons said I had an arthritc hip after a cycling crash, and I should never run again and I should wait for a hip replacement, and then never run again. I got a 2nd and 3rd opinion and then had a high femoral osteotomy, spent 6 months on crutches, then came back and fullfilled the dream of completing an Ironman Triathlon,... 4 times. I reckon I kicked it up the arse! Fall down 7 times, get up 8!

You know you're getting old when you go in for surgery and the nurses recognise you 😂

Just getting some vanity surgery, 4 dental implants. I reckon my mouth will be a bit sore this time tomorrow night. Then you have to wait 6 months for them to bed into the jaw before they stick the prosthetic tooth into it.

Full face helmet for you.

So do they put in temporary prosthetic teeth in for that 6 months?

No. I had them extracted at various times and had nothing there anyway. I grind my teeth and cracked them. Have to wear a mouthguard to bed. Anyway the implant is a metal base that gets implanted into the jaw bone. Once the bone grows and there is union and it becomes permanent then they can attach the artificial teeth, which takes about 6 months. All this means is that if these teeth get damaged or worn you can "easily" replace them.
