Hey guys

Just wanting some help on decision making, I was wanting to upgrade my XC (Cell MTX-R) hardtail bike to a dual suspension bike. The price range that im willing to spend is around the $1000 mark. The bikes i've sorta considered is the 08 Yukon SX and was wondering if they are any good considering that they're cheap entry level duallie by Giant. The other bike which is a bit older is the Mongoose Teocali 06 elite model.
Now i have seen these around the $1000 mark but i am open to suggestions on other bikes i should consider that are around this price range (second hand or New).

The type of riding that i do is a little bit of downhill, but mainly trail riding.

Cheers

Spec wise, the Yukon is fantastic...on par with the Alias/Talon which are leaders in the XC hardtail market...and you know that Giant always give you fantastic 'bang for buck'. One would think being a 4-bar linkage style suspention, that it would be fairly good, pedaling wise...they are stocked with a Giant branded shock which features a form of pedal platform. Ive seen these shocks used on overseas NRS bikes and they were fairly ordinary...but will do the job never the less. Your better off with the equivelant shock from Fox...
The Teocali is alround better speced...better parts etc but Mongoose freedrive frames are renowned for being fairly high-maintenence with bearings etc. The upside is that you get a fairly stable platform to pedal on.

Personally, Id be looking at the Teocali for the associated spec list...other bikes to consider second hand around that price would be Jamis Dakars, Giant VTs (maybe) and even Giant Trance...could even press for a Giant AC but avoid 2005 and 2006 ACs...fairly ordinary...

Good luck man!

if you are going to be doing downhill look for a used bighit or something along those lines as it will hold up better then those you are looking at

Im a bit of a newbie to all these hardcore bikes n stuff but love riding and am getting into it - (I actually joined these forums to see if anyone had a yukon fx)

- noone had written anything about them so i decided as i was just getting into bikes low end should be ok so i got one.

annnnnyway im loving it so far, so much nicer than a hardtail to ride off road - heaps of grip (i did change from the kenda tires to some michelin xc drys which may have helped) and on road seems fine in the seat sprinting is great - hardly bounces at all- only pops when u stand up.

like i said tho im only getting into MTBing so i have no comparison for this bike but it certainly doesnt feel cheap.

all the best

Well, after a few years away from the MTB scene, I bought a 08 Yukon SX in Novemeber for cross training. It has been hammered since then on all sorts of trails and (For the money)it rocks...
Handles well, jumps ok (Don't tell Giant), seems to handle the knocks so far better than I do!!.
Will keep me going till I can afford a Trance :)

you would probably be better off getting a hardtail. No offense but i doubt your going to be doing anything that really justifys having a dually. Most XC riders have hardtails anyway. If you can save up a couple more hundred dollars get a talon, which in my opinion is one of the best value for money bikes on the market. You'll be really happy with it.

They are a spring fork.
My Partner has a Yukon 09 which has upgraded forks, wheels, brakes, shorter stem, and she loves it.
I think it makes a great trail bike and the standard shock has a good pedalling platform.

Some times i get off my Specialized pitch Pro and have a play on her Yukon.
I find its real easy to manual and is a fun play bike for the money they are great and id pick it over the mongoose no matter what spec list because i dont like the mongoose suspension design.

Hi all,
I've had my Yukon SX for about 18months now, and it's a great bike in terms of value for money.
I use it as a commuter, 20km a day 5 days a week and then do at least 2-3 hours of trail riding on the weekend. As soon as I get my roadie/SS it'll be my dedicated trails bike.

Front Suspension: Not too shabby, definitely not as smooth as more expensive forks (Comes with Rockshox Tora 302 4"/100mm w/PopLoc). I use the lock out function for commuting and have almost no bob when it's locked out.

Rear Suspension: Giant Air Shock. It's adjustable so you can set sag etc according to your weight. It does the job on the trails, certainly miles ahead of a hard tail in terms of comfort, even with a cheap shock on it.

For someone that's keen to get into MTBing and has a limited budget I think this bike is perfect. I've upgraded a few things along the way, but only because YOU'RE COMPELLED TO UPGRADE BITS! :D

Any other specific questions let me know.

Oh and it's also not a bad looking bike...IMHO ;)

hey guys, im pretty new to this forum, but enjoying it all the same.
i just bought a yukon sx, but will need to get the rear swingarm either welded or replaced.
there is plenty of good guys around my area than can fix, but where would I find a replacement?
im guessing there is plenty of decent bike wreckers around the country?
any help in the right direction would be appreciated.

If you are the original owner go to the shop you purchased it from and they should warranty it, if not still try at the shop it originated from. My mate had one of these fail on him too while out of warranty and he was given an XTC frame as a replacement because they had no swingarms left.

If this fails then you would likely be better off saving for a second hand frame, as I'd assume a repair from someone reputable such as Gripsport would likely cost as much/more than the frames worth

I got an '08 Yukon SX right after they came out, mid 2007... had it for just over 4 years and snapped the drive side chainstay riding up a gutter.
It just tore right through.

As guitar1234 mentioned about his buddy, I also got a warranty replacement through my LBS where I purchased it, and was offered a 2012 XTC for free, or spend $1000 and get an Anthem X3 or Trance X3.

I went with the Trance X3, which I still have today (albeit heavily modified).

However, it sounds like you bought yours second hand so the above isn't an option for you.
Looks like your only options are:
1) Find someone else selling a Yukon SX and buy that one - only to have it fail again later down the track (seems to be common).
2) Buy a second hand frame that would fit your existing parts and transfer them over.
3) Get a quote from GripSport on a repair job (www.gripsport.com.au)

I suppose the Yukon FX swingarm would fit also, seeing as they are the same bike, only with a different spec and paintwork.
There's also the option of finding an '09 model, and after that the Yukon only appeared overseas... so you might have luck there too.

I wouldn't chase after a warranty replacement. If you are confident the guys can weld it, go for that. It's way quicker and you won't be replacing a failed part with the exact same part. you'll have a better version as long as they guy on the welder keeps the geometry right and doesn't warp it with too much heat.

Thanks guys,
I have had it repaired by an alloy specialist, but not too hopeful on its life span! And yes, I have been on the lookout for another Giant Yukon or Halo donor frame / swingarm from the same era.
According to our local Giant store, 99% of the Yukons came back with the same prob, and yes they'd replace with a better quality frame. I bought mine 2nd or 3rd hand so the store pretty much laughed and just tried to sell me a new ride!

Howdy
I have a 2011 Mongoose Super and really like it, definately try to get a later model if you can the frames look better and I believe they fixed and breaking problems they were having with earlier frames. The earlier ones have spring forks and shox and are heavier and ones I've seen only have cable brakes. Check out youtube for Mongoose flicks with Chris Akrid on his. Happy shopping
