Default Play in Hope Pro2 Evo rear hub axle after service?

After replacing the bearings in my Hope Pro2 Evo rear hub, I noticed significant side to side play in the rear wheel. Stripping down the hub, I can move the axle slightly from side to side, which translates to ~5mm play in the rear wheel. Installing the bearings all went according to plan and they were genuine Hope bearings, so I really can't figure out why I've got play. It may have been there before the bearings were replaced, I never actually tested it.

Any clues as to why the axle isn't completely snug in the bearings? If they weren't seated correctly you would think there would be binding, not play. Is it possible that when I ordered the bearing kit they gave me the wrong ones? Would an older non-Evo bearing have a slightly different ID?

It's pretty frustrating, I'm tempted to knock the offending bearing out and try putting the old one back in, but then I'm back to a crunchy bearing...

Did you put the spacer in between the inboard freehub bearing and hub shell bearing? I can't see it in the picture.

Non-evo bearings are 15mm id. Evo freehub bearings are 17mm id.

Yes, the spacer was in there. The specs/text on the installed bearing are different to that of the bearings that came out, but that doesn't mean they're the wrong ones. I can't read the text, so they're coming out to be measured. I think the difference between an ID of 15 and 17 would be much more noticeable than the small amount of play I've got.

    Thats not a good sign.

    They should be

    Hub Type Bearings id Dimensions
    Hope pro 2 evo rear S61903 17 17x30x7
    Hope pro 2 evo rearS61903 17 17x30x7
    Hope pro 2 evo rearS17287 17 17x28x7
    Hope pro 2 evo rearS6803 17 17x26x5
    Hope pro 2 evo rearS6803 17 17x26x5

    Not
    Hope pro 2 rear 61902 2RS 15 15x28x7
    Hope pro 2 rear 61802 2RS 15 15x24x5
    Hope pro 2 rear 61802 2RS 15 15x24x5
    Hope pro 2 rear 61903 2RS 17 17x30x7
    Hope pro 2 rear 61903 2RS 17 17x30x7

Actually hub shell bearings are the same its just the freehub bearings.

So I took the bearings out again and the ID was correct at 17. Just for shits n giggles I replaced the bearing in the pic with one of the old ones and suddenly the play disappeared. I reckon it was a dodgy bearing or else I munted in when pressing it in, but this is really unlikely as it's just slightly more than press fit and didn't need much force to seat. I used a homemade press tool with a washer that was nice and snug on the right part of the bearing, so It's highly unlikely that I ruined it. The offending bearing feels buttery smooth now it's out, but when I put it on the axle and pressed it snug towards where it would seat, I could feel the play.

Oh well, the axle is spinning better than it was with 2 rooted bearings... I'll try and source another bearing at some point and whack that in, but at least I've removed the play.

Warranty the bearings and get Enduros from DIYMTB. I read somewhere that the Hope bearings are german but I've always had better luck with Enduro and SKF.
