Used to be good now its populated by giggling bimbo's and trying to be alternative but actually really mainstream music.
When they do play good music its quite late and I cant be bothered staying up when I have my ipod with only music i like on it.
Sorry to say.
I used to love this station but as shown by the newest hottest 100 there are only 2 good songs on that cd.

'Tis about the waitress at the cafe if it's the one I'm thinking of.

I only listen to JJJ, but that's because all the other stations are terrible in Adelaide.

The later specialty shows are where it's at. Short Fast Loud, Groove Train, live sets, Friday arvo DJ set. There is still some quality on there, but I agree that everything else has gone arse up. Edit : Super request still goes alright, and House Party can do pretty well.

I hope to one day stab dools in the eye with something salty.

Thanks for your input guys, nice to know you have cranky pants and you love verbal dribble via advertising and sped up songs made by nine year olds..........

The new Karnivool stuff is great and sounds awesome on the radio.
I didn't get to put my votes in for hottest 100 of all time as each time I went on it was down for service.

For all it's faults it's still the best nationally funded 'youth' radio network I know...

Put it this way, BBC Radio 1 during the day is little more than Nova or Fox with the exception of the occasional indie, grime or alternative track.

Triple J, however is one of the first places I could check out the likes of Modest Mouse, McClusky, The Dresden Dolls, TISM, Frenzal Rhomb, Vampire Weekend, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kings of Leon (1st album era when they actually still looked like Skynyrd and didn't play washed-up Bon Jovi imitations), Tomahawk, Kyuss, QOTSA, Flight of the Conchords, Dizzee Rascal, M.I.A, Peaches and sooo many more bands in the middle of the afternoon - and without any of it being censored for swearing either.

Hell, my mates told me about the controversy about them playing NWA's 'fuck the police', the resulting shitstorm and JJJ's response (apparently going on strike for a day and playing NWA's 'Express Yourself' in retaliation in a day-long loop) and the fact that until they made the hottest 100 specific to the previous year Joy Division's 'Love will tear us apart' used to win every year! That shit just cemented it in my mind as being one of the sweetest radio stations ever!

Sure, there are 'cooler' local radio stations in Australia but they're still at the end of the day 'local' and you're not going to be able to hear them outside of the big cities. Or without adverts.

Also how shit would Australia Day be without the hottest 100 as a soundtrack?

Strangely I agree with all the above posts, for and against (except Dozers, I think he's in a bad mood at the minute)

PoSM, its a bit of a quandry like BBC Radio 1 isnt it. As a free national service it aint that bad, but has had some shocking íncarnations' in its time and some segments that just need to die (except for John Peel, he should never have past).

But, Hack shits me to tears. The interviewers cant interview and most of the time the interviewees are the worst 'representation' they can seem to find. And for a show promoting itself as non-sensationalist, fringe interest, high journalist integrity approach, its always about the same bloody thing. Aborignal wotnot, some facet of sexual interest and/or the environment.

Mind you, for a boring old fart like me, the Saturday 'house party'mix isnt so bad, saves me having think and create an ipod playlist...

Very true POSM. I'm still a big fan of JJJ somtimes, but those NWA days are long gone. Now they are trying to emulate the commercial stations with their style/structure of their regualr shows (breakfast/drive etc). There's still quality there, but you just have to look for it nowdays.

The Doctor is from Frenzal Rhomb, and he's one of the main perprtrators.

Straight Lines by Silverchair got 2nd in the Hottest 100. Says a lot.

I think JJJ is bit of a funny one. As far as accessible radio stations go it's still by far the best on offer. I find interesting the "it used to be alternative now it's too mainstream" line because I really think that just reflects an increase or shift in it's audience base rather than a significant change of style on the station's part. Realistically, they're still playingthe same types of music, it's just that in the last 6 or 7 years the likes of KOL, Tool, Muse, Modest Mouse etcetera have brought that style to a new market of listeners who have grown up with and away from the crappy top 40 pop hits championed by the likes of Nova et al, and as such the type of music they play now has a more mainstream appeal - you only have to look at the likes of Yves Klein Blue, Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Tame Impala etc to see that music that 5 years ago would have been considered alternative and very exclusive is now widely accepted and enjoyed.

Anyway, the Js are still the best we've got. As far as I'm concerned all they need to do is burn all their Oz hip hop tapes and they'll be just about right.

All that says is that JJJ has a wider more popular voting fan base than it used to.
My point exactly, and they are targeting this market. Become more mainstream, appealing to commercial audiences. Hell, I've tried to change the station to JJJ in other people's cars because the mindless talkback on some ridiculous topic was doing my head in. It was already on JJJ. Bugger.

This is just for the big shows though, still got much love for the specialty shows.

No way man, I'm on a high today! Winners grin from ear to ear.;) I simply detest hearing people jump on the Triple J hate list simply because they hear a song on a commercial station then hear it on the J's and assume that Triple J jumped on the wagon. It never goes like that............never.

It's easier for stuff to be considered "mainstream" these days. 5 or 10 years ago, file sharing, torrents and other legal alternatives, such as MySpace Music, were either unheard of or uninvented. Access to lots of different music is now easy and cheap. The easier music is to access, the more mainstream it will become.

You only think JJJ is bad because you don't have to listen to BBC Radio 1.

Leitch can moan all he likes about the Aussie Hip Hop side of things on the J's, but in the UK, the Hip Hop show is hosted by the 52-year-old son of an Anglican Archbishop. Tim Westwood. Jesus H Christ. I never in my life imagined I'd hear such a man get on the radio and scream "Yeah yeah, shout outs to all the 423 Crew reppin' da east side of Grimsby, ya'll my gangsta's f'real" and be completely dead serious about it. But it happened.

On the flipside, I'm now in Canada and the quality of Satellite/Digital radio is awesome. For every musical genre you can name there's at least one station that specialises in it and usually 2 or 3. That shit leaves JJJ in the dust, it's like having several versions of your favourite MP3 playlist on tap all day every day.

I love Triple J, I listen to it for the music/no ads/new stuff.....But what really shits me to tears is the Drive shows and also hack. If I wanted to listen to AM radio, I fucking would......Put some fucking music on........I want to listen to music, and I hear 2 songs in half an hour........Way to make the drive boring.........Granted that is just for 7:30-8:00am and 3:30-4:00pm, and then Dools' Drule until 5:30, followed by more talking until 6:15

Also I tend to think they keep playing the more popular songs more and more often........Which is alright for a week, but not when I keep hearing the 'new music' of last month.

I prefer to use the term "popular alternative".

Based on my listening history I'd say that there have been some fairly significant changes in the stations format to meet a greater audience and market share.

Some of you may not remember it, but when JJJ went national (well all capitals) ~1990 there was a less than subtle shift from what it used to be prior to that. Similarly when the endless cross promotion and significant pushing of particular ablums and artists started (again early 90s), it became a lot more see through.

I don't mind the current format that much as to me it hasn't changed that much since the early to mid 90s.

What does annoy me a little is that the current JJJ marketting and management deems me and my demographic to be outside their target group.
