Rear tyre recommendation

Ok, I know that tyre threads have been done to death in these forums but I'm looking for fairly specific advice:

I'm happy with my front tyre, Maxxis Minion DH, it's reliable and predictable. I'm about to go tubeless with my new wheelset and want advice about my rear tyre choice.

  • I like a wide, high volume tyre 2.3+
  • I currently use a high roller for winter and a Kenda SB8 for summer
  • I'd like something that rolls like the SB8 but corners a bit more like the High Roller
  • Needs to be a good UST tyre
  • I ride plenty of rocky trails and also dusty hardpack, needs to perform well on both

Anyone had particular success stories?

I have just gone tubeless as well...

I have a UST supertacky HighRoller on the back at the moment... Can report back about how it feels. Although a highroller is a highroller, they are tried and proven...

I've gone from a 2.1" SB8 on the back to a 2.25" Ardent, both UST. I don't notice any real difference in rolling resistance but grip is definitely better. The Ardent has taken a little while to get used to on the back though. I've tried the Highroller but never liked it.

Spesh Purgatory 2.2 is serving me well. Can't compare to the Kenda, but grip is good, lives longer, is rounder in profile and much larger than the 2.35 HR. Great tubeless down to 20psi. Perhaps not so grippy on wood as some. Not cheap.

I've tried a few different Maxxis combinations, and I've found that the Minion DHF on the front, and HighRoller II on the rear is spot on for most conditions.

With the DHF on the rear, I found cornering was good, but it lacked braking grip, the DHR was the opposite. The Highroller II seems to combine the best of both worlds. Good cornering grip and great braking grip. Plus it rolls much better than the DHR.

I just rotate my old front to rear when I need a new rear.
I also ride 2.35 Minions and Highrollers. Sticky compounds don't last long on the rear, if buying a rear specific I'd go 60comp. There's definitely be faster rolling tyres, and it is very dependent on the soil type you mainly ride, and season also..
I have Schwalbale something on hardtail, probably give them a go on AM bike next.

ignitor

I run a Minion DHF supertacky 2.5 on the front and a Maxxis Ignitor 2.35 on the rear, both UST. I like the way the Ignitor rolls and gives pretty good grip in the corners, predictable slide.

Thanks guys, some good advice.

The UST wheels I just bought came with a set of 2 DHF minions. So I think I'll give it a go on the rear for a couple of rides, if I don't like it i'll buy myself a UST high roller 2 in a 60a and have a spare front tyre.

Maybe controversial, but I really struggle to go past a 2.25 Maxxis Crossmark, UST obviously for your criteria, that's what I run.

It's only the deepest moments of winter that throw it off course. Super fast rolling, pretty sweet cornering grip and most of all it's very predictable.

Get on board.

Yep, I run a LUST crossmark 2.25 as well.

- bag is the same size as a 2.4 Nobby Nic.
- great mileage, I do a fair bit of riding and find it wears exceptionally well.
- I run the LUST for the extra sidewall protection.
- not the gripiest tyre, but it corners well and the mileage I get out of them is pretty hard to beat.
- I ride on varied surfaces. Loose/sandy, loose marbles, dark soil, sandstone and granit surfaces and it is extremely predictable right through the life of the tyre.

Im currently trying a Specialised 'The Captain' 2.2 on the rear. And a Specialized Purgatory 2.4 on the front of my Ibis HD. I think im using the Control 2bliss casing, both blew up tubeless very easily with goo.
Both are quiet a big bag for there nominated size. Something i kind of wanted as I tend to still ride some tamer Dh courses now i've rid of the Dh bike, and didnt want the lighter build on my nice new carbon wheels to take too much of a punishment too soon.

They've been quiet good i think. Plenty of grip for the more Dh type of riding, yet i haven't really complained about rolling resistance. Im sure there are faster tyres out there but i think they've been a good compromise so far for everything from Xc rides to Dh runs.
The Captain tyre on the rear has been very grippy going up hill over rocks/roots etc. Really grabs well. Downhill seems to give enough edge and predictable enough.

I run a Maxxis Ikon (2.2 exo) in summer (with Ardent 2.25 up front). It is quite similar to the SB8 but slightly bigger knobs and a bigger bag.

I'm really happy with the Schwalbe Hans Dampf 2.35s on my Reign.
Funnily enough I've decided to go with the Hans Dampf to give it a go. The minion DHF isn't doing it for me s a rear, still love it as a front though, even more so I can run the lower pressures of UST as well. We'll see how it goes.

Any further info on the Hans Dampf as I am interested in the putting them on the rear of my bike in the near future.

I love my Hans Dampfs.

Go Pacestar compound on the rear though. The Trailstar compound is softer than snot and gets chewed out after a few hard rides.

+1 for hans dampf,

using a 2.35 on the rear of my stumpy evo, I'm loving it, solid grip and predictable if it decides to slide
