What is the purpose of the windmills that were built throughout the Netherlands (not talking about modern wind turbines)

Edit: I am looking for a use that is somewhat specific to the area, not uses common outside of the Netherlands like milling flour etc.

That's it, back to you. They had a.network of windmills and canals,.the.windmills would lift the water a.metre or.sk to the higher canal so they could pump it out to rivers and oceans. They basically.made land.for.farming where there.had been under sea.level lakes.and.bogs.

My FIL says it was to help drain off water from the flooded low laying areas.
