Most of it gets frozen in storage and then thawed out on shelves. Two~three weeks later they end up like shit especially if they have been handled roughly.
First couple months at woolies were always the not so great produce. Then the nicer stuff is towards the middle and end of the season, especially peaches and nectarines are pretty bland until mid season.

They're actually kept just above zero in a humidity controlled cool room. Some varieties are about 8 months old now.

The best fruit is nearly always what is local and in season. More often than not it's what is cheapest as well.

Exactly, we get the fresh oranges from the out-laws in Qld and they last much longer than anything from the supermarket, same for the tropical fruits, mango's etc.

My parents are 3rd generational farmers and we used to sell to Coles and Woolworths and also Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne fruit markets. Most stuff people get is just old crap these days, they are held in cold rooms at the farms then refrigerated transport then back into a cold room, sold to people and shops, and back into refrigeration. The only way you're going to get fresh stuff in the city is if you drive out to a farm.

I admire their commitment to getting their job done swiftly and efficiently. Their sacrifice of work conditions helps keep our prices low, for the grocery duopoly, and profits high.
Isn't humanity a POS, when you look at the villages in places like the Philippines the fruit pickers are the lucky ones. If any Aussie was forced to live that life, it would make them realise how good our govt is compared to theirs. Some parts of the world are a disgrace to humanity.

Are the countries these villages are in good for a cheap holiday though? Might look at grabbing a sweet air bnb there and get a feel for the culture.
