One easy upgrade would be new bars and stem. Getting some wider, more comfortable bars and shorter stem does make a big difference in controlling the bike, so it should help the bike ride better. New tyres should help the bike ride better to. You might like some new wheels if the ones you have...

I used to have one of those except it was red! There a great bikes for hitting the xc trails and that kind of stuff...have fun!

Yeah my DJ3's have been great so far for downhill too...even though they only have 120mm travel!
