Well come and experience Blue Derby, Tasmania's (and Australia's) newest and greatest mountain bike destination, and what better excuse than the 2015 XCM marathon championships.
Derby is a small town, and the $2.2 million project is set to save its economy from a dying history of mining and logging. The trails duck and weave through a variety of forests including native eucalyptus, wet rainforests, giant ferns and bare rock river beds offering spectacular views over the township and local area.

The marathon champs is a chance to see Australia's best battle it out over 90kms of single trail, whilst also offering categories suited for weekend warriors, families and even kids.
The races will be held on the 16-17th May 2015, (Derby is also hosting 2016), offering the chance for a fun weekend away.
Entries are now open from the MTBA website: http://mtb.subaru.com.au/marathon-championships
NOTE: There are to be some changes to distances - mainly for older aged categories. (Eg: Masters 5-6 and 7+ will be changed to significantly shorter distances).
The course will consist of mostly singletrail with a few sections of fireroad and will start and finish in the township of Derby. Elite riders will complete 3 laps of a 30k course, and other categories will complete shorter variations of this loop. The elevation gradient can be found below:

Accommodation information and other information about what to do in the area can be found on helpful websites such as Ride Tassie (http://www.ridetassie.com/). There are also other mountain bike destinations in the local area if you wanted to make a longer trip out of it, including Hollybank Reserve, Blue Derby Descent, Kate Reed Reserve and Trevalyn Reserve.

Launceston Mountain Bike Club (LMBC) in conjunction with Dorset Council and MTBA are working together run this event.
Feel free to contact me, from the LMBC, if you have any queries: brendan.adair@hotmail.com

Reports of the Cascade Dam loop, titled Dambusters, is that it is truely epic.
Dambusters opens to the public tomorrow, completing the final section of the race loop.

At the risk of starting yet another tyre choice discussion, just wondering as some of this track is fairly new and there has been a bit of rain of late, what kind of surface conditions can we expect?

Although it has rained recently, the forecast from Thursday onwards is tops. The trails dry out quickly.
Surface types vary from loose rock, granite slab and clay however predominantly it is a sandy loam.

No worries.
As a local, I highly recommend Hollybank - its my favorite.
Blue Tier descent is awesome as well. Its also local so may be great for a Monday adventure especially if the weather is nice.
