So I am looking at getting some. Possibly going with Hutchinson TORO on the front and either Hutchinson Python or Geax Saguaro on the rear. The drama is now trying to find somewhere in Australia or overseas(with free or cheap shipping)

What are the side wall difference between these and the likes of the Maxxis 29ers ?
I had got a small 1cm side wall tear already on the Maxxis crossmark (sealed straight up as I didn't even notice :)) but would like to get something tougher on the Giant 29er rims as I had to replace the maxxis tyre as the tear got bigger due to The Oaks sharp rocks grrr.
Has anyone got this combination ? or have any thoughts on it.

Does anyone in Australia stock any 29er tyres that have a thicker sidewall UST TNT etc.

You are going to get the same answer here as you got on MTBR.
There are VERY few UST 29er tyres globally. And I mean sweet bugger all.
There are probably even fewer UST 29er tyres oer here. Hell you guys in Sydney and Melbourne seem to have problems finding even a simple 29er tube so what chance do you have of locating a good supply of UST 29er tyres.

If you want to spend stupid $ on some tyres with protection then perhaps look at the snakeskin version of the Schwalbe range.
But if you are riding where there are sharp rocks then you probably should be looking at something beefier like the Panaracer Rampage.

Yes I realise that there are very few UST hence the TNT ETC in the title :p. I have searched and can not find much in Australia. As this is an Australian site I thought I would try my luck here with 29er tyres that have thicker sidewalls. What are your thoughts on the Specialized 29er tyres ? I have read mixed results from them.

Plenty of places that sell tubes in Sydney I have found. Although they are very fricken expensive. Giant tubes with the longer valve are sold at like $12 a pop. OUCH !.
My main issue is getting them to my door from over seas, basically I pay for 3 tyres and get 2 in the mail :( damn international shipping.

Im very interested in trying the Geax TNT Barro 2.0, the weight is halfway between their conventional tyre and the full UST versions they do, anyone tried Geax TNT product tubeless with or without sealant, 26" or 29"?

Price for Schwalbe is double the Maxxis price when I last looked.
Apparently they are awesome tyres but stupid expensive.

With regard to the Specialized tyres that I have used (non UST) they cut on sharp rocks just like any XC tyre will.
As I said, if you are riding in rocky terrain then you need to look for some more aggressive tyres.
There are tons of guys in the US successfully riding rocky terrain on standard tyres converted with Stans.
But they are not riding XC tyres.

Hmmm, never had rock problems at the Oaks. I run either Racing Ralph 2.25s (just the normal variety, not the snakeskin ones) or Conti Race Kings. I'm just replacing the RR I have on the rear of the bike with a slight sidewall abrasion that I got while out at Appin on the weekend... could probably be solved with the addition of more Stans but its got close to 1000kms on it and I have a set of race kings waiting to go on.

I think the sidewalls on the race kings are a little better and they seem more durable (I've had the front Race king on for nearly a year and 3000kms now and it is just starting to look a little tired...)

What pressures are you running? I'm about 85kg (or so!) in riding gear and generally run about 28-32psi... 28psi feels better but I do get the odd rock impact that goes through to the rim.

Bontrager XDX

Hi - ride a 'training tyre' for when not racing and look for exactly what you do - completely reliable and bomb-proof.

There is very little available, but the one I use, and can whole-heartedly recommend, is the Bontrager XDX 2.1.
It is branded as 'tubeless ready' - which basically means its got thick old sidewalls.
Its seals on rims in no-time and the missus and I must have clocked up at least 1500km with not one pucture or issue.

They are a bit heavy (which is fine for a training tyre) at 750grms or so, but inspire a hell of a lot of confidence, and just smash through rocks.

Give them a look - a very good, tough, tyre for the 29er.

Blackmans at Penrith is a Schwalbe dealer and can hook you up. Will prob be a special order (as was in my case) but can be done. I bought a 2.4 and 2.25 RR. Like Sumgy mentioned they are great on the dry hardpack but insanely expensive ($110 per tyre...) and as such I only use them on race days. Rocks haven't been a problem for me though and I have ridden The Oaks, Yarramundi and the DW100 on them without issue.

My 2 cents...

Thanks for the replys. I have spoken to Chris from Blackmans who should be getting back to me shortly. I emailed a few other places and it seems they are not getting them till april :(.

The Bontrager looks the goods as well. Might head up to Rouse Hill over the weekend and have a chat to the Trek store

Yeah, I've got a friend who's running them with sealant and hasn't had any trouble of any kind, sidewalls are nice and thick. The downside? They are a ridiculously tight seat... he put them on ZTR Arches, required 2 people and broke a couple of levers. If they ever need to come off/get punctured, it won't be a quick repair.

Yorto - Geax Saguaro 29er TNTs are available in Aus - just beware the tight fit.

So I found a store that has a few Bontragers in stock (Trek at Rouse hill had 1 tyre 29x1.85 WTF).
Clarence St Cyclery http://www.cyclery.com.au/ Have a few different 29ers and they have the Bontrager xcx tlr 29er x 210 ARC. $79. I have only just purchased the one for the time being as I have found the Maxxis Ignitor up front does its job rather well.

www.abcbikes.com.au they can order most stuff in. Hutchinson, Schwalbe and Bontrager
Geax I have been told www.eddiesalascycles.com.au can order in the geax gear.
Blackmans can get the Schwalbe RR's but are on back order at the moment
