On Friday 13th of February 1970, Black Sabbath released their self titled debut album.

While it's possibly not the birth of Heavy Metal, nor the first time the phrase was coined, today marks the release of what is probably the most significant record in the development of metal as we know it today.

Without Black Sabbath, Heavy Metal (and all it's many sub-genres) would not exist.

Although I don't love Sabbath, I will listen to them for hours before I touch a fucking Metallica song.

Interesting this came up, I just got home from a gig where I saw the 3 worst metal bands, ever.

Haven't listened to black sabbath in ages, but after seeing this thread I've now got the wizard on rotation. It's like getting a really bad taste out of my mouth...

Oh, it was also Henry Rollins' Birthday yesterday. A terrible omission for someone with a Black Flag avatar!

It's ok though, because he's American and it's still the 13th over there!
