Sketch up actually really easy to use once you get your bearings. Start by learning how to use the basic tools and build from there. There's heaps of written and video tutorials available. It can be very fiddly at times and hard to get perfect but I would say it's ideal for the purpose you stated.

I also use the skecthup for supporting my work.. i have original version of skecthup 7.
when compared with other 3d programs, no other 3d program like this...
skecthup was very easy to use, not too difficult to learn. does not require high computer specs, not too many tools and you can be free to design what ever you like...

There isnt any program easier than google sketchup. The only problem with google sketchup it takes a lot longer to draw stuff compared to programs like pro desktop, autocad and Catia. If you are willing to pay for a program I would recommend autocad for house and garden designs.

Sketchup kicks ass, there's nothing more accessible for 3D. The community behind it also gives you access to stacks of building blocks to get you going faster. If you just want to draw plan views in 2D then there might be something better out there.

I felt a bit the same way before I stumbled upon this YouTube channel. Aidan has an awesome way of presenting the basic concepts. He also wrote the "for dummies" book which is also excellent.

Hey,

Just wondering if anyone has been using any software to render models from SketchUp. I've been doing some architectural work for presentations, usually just using SU to view 3d models, however I need to produce some stills for marketing material. Just wondering if there is any easy to use software to quickly produce better quality images, preferably on it's way to photo-realistic, however I don't have that much time to commit to the project.

Cheers

Yep, Kerkythea is free and good once you sort it out. These are nothing special (was putting a book together for my young nephew) Clearly I am no wiz at vehicle design :)

In terms of time and quality of output, Sketch Up is probably the fastest and easiest visual realization package available. Once you learn how to use it properly, architectural projects can come together within a matter of minutes - it has single handedly revolutionized the architecture industry as an idea can spring to life in real time.

It is not a difficult program to master, however it will take a week or two to become used to the methodology and process of building objects, but trust me once mastered you will become an addict. when your doing the tutorials, pay particular attention to the process of building objects - big time saver. Also, try to autosave you work every 5-10 minutes..

Like WolfCreekPsycho mentioned, Kerkythea is probably the easiest post-production rendering program that can render stills and animations. They have also just released an internal version of Kerkythea called Twilight that works from within Sketchup - I have began using it and I have to say, its an outstanding program. But you can use both to get a desired result, depending on the project.
Make sure you install the SU2KT plugin so you can export directly into kerkythea if not using twilight (they use the same render engine but are totally separate programs)

You can also use Blender which is also free, its a kinda hybrid program cross between skethup and kerkythea, in that you can build things and render them within one convenient program. They are now using this software to make animated flicks too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HomAZcKm3Jo
