What if it is baloney and the only reason we think its real is that we live on a bulging disk that is accelerating up through space at 9.98m/s/s ?

That rests on the backs of four huge elephants which are in turn standing on the back of an enormous turtle?

It wouldn't even be that hard to protect the border, could do it easily with a few hundred men and a wall of Ice.

Brilliant!
will be viewed with the same mix of pity and disgust as people wearing Unit wifebeaters.
well said, except where i'm from people wearing unit wifebeaters are considered top blokes and people who cant afford unit stuff look up to them.

also, I was raised a christian, but now I spend too much time riding my bike to worry about it.

I however am very normal. Trust me.
Figured this would fit best in this thread.

I work in academia with a broad range of people of differing nationalities. ethnicity and religious beliefs. I quite enjoy the variety and to be honest if a person is a prick it's because they are and not of any of the aforementioned attributes.

But what is happening at work is if you are of another religious belief other than Christian, it appears you are entitled to your religious holidays (fair enough) - work pays for your time off (separate from holiday pay) but also you also get all the normal Christian public holidays (doubling dipping).

Where do I sign up for this?!? Do I actually have to believe - do I have to show proof of religious belief to my employer to get these extra holidays?

Having to attend even a couple of religious ceremonies in a 12 month period would totally outweigh the benefits of said holidays.

question

In light of the obvious date, Those of you who believe in a religion or those of you who are atheist that does not believe in Jesus do you still celebrate Christmas?
Im curious it just seems ironic.

I celebrate Christmas, just like Christians celebrate Saturnalia, Romans celebrated Yule and northern europeans celebrated the pagan rights of the winter solstice.

Whats the reasoning behind it to you.

Each celebration has some form of reason, Christmas is there for Christ's birth, so given as you said you are a atheist what are you celebrating?
Not trying to start a e-fight but as someone who does believe in Christ I am intrigue by the celebration for Christmas by those who don't, its somewhat hypocritical and ironic to celebrate a birth that you don't believe in.

i refuse to celebrate Giftmas. I'll comply to the minimum effort required to make the more moderate of the fam happy but I will NOT cebrate a Pagan ritual subsumed by the Catholic Church for any other reason but to catch up with and check in with those who I choose to.

Putting aside the analysis and reasons given in the vid.

We have moved from a culture that had two yearly festivals (and another on their 1st, 3rd and 5th birthdays) to celebrate children to a culture that only has one festival a year.

We are not interested so much in the commerical side of it, more making children the focus of a special day once a year.

BTW, nice rant, Vi.

Watch the vid and you will know why I celebrate xmas.
My internet is so slow right now it will take like 30min to download that 7min video. So cant be bothered aha.
Im just going to assume its the same reason as many people who don't believe celebrate, its become such a festive time of the year that its lost its meaning so people just celebrate for the sake of a party and the social convention rather than the actual meaning of the birth of Christ.

I'm assuming the same goes for Easter.

We celebrate Christmas as a family holiday, catch up with various family members that I rarely see, it's the only place outside of a wedding that everyone gathers as a group - have a family lunch a few domestics, that sort of thing.

I imagine that how a lot of people see Christmas.

I celebrate family, friends and good times. To be Honest I don't see how the commercialised festival, with its pagan origins we call Christmas has much to do with Christ's birthday.

Do you not find it ironic that Christians partake in a bunch of prechristrain symbolism and pagan rites to celebrate the birth of some one they claim supersedes all that came before?
