Avid Elixir 3 hose resizing.

I need to resize the rear hose on my Elixir 3 brakes. I've been told it can be done without having to bleed them. Anyone know if it's true?
 
I've done it a couple of times but it's not the same every time.
I always stick a new barb on when I cut hoses to it does squeeze some fluid back into the line but you will always get a new air bubble, usually two; when you do it.
Bleeding Juicy 3's isn't hard and can be the difference between brakes that are good enough or brakes that are great.
