The BMX Queensland State Championships will get underway in Bundaberg tomorrow with over 800 riders racing over five days.

With Queensland titles being the second largest BMX event in Australia racing is expected to be fast and furious with102 state titles up for grabs.

Riders from 30 clubs throughout Queensland will be out to claim cruiser and 20 inch state titles while a ‘new’ breed of retro riders will be making their debut.

One of the largest contingents will be from the strong Cairns BMX club with 226 race entries. The local Bundaberg club has an impressive 120 race entries while Townsville BMX club and Caboolture Club come in close with 115 and 114 respectively.

After hosting the Central Queensland Titles in May and then the Cane Toad Classic in July the state titles this week will be the largest BMX event ever held in Bundaberg.

The event has already sparked up a lot of interest locally in the community and with riders.

“The pre-titles racing numbers are big this year so people are keen to try out the revamped track. We got local businesses to help us resurfaced it and fence around it which is great. We are hoping this will attract a lot of new members and that they’ll join up,” said Bundaberg club president, Shane Davies.

State BMX President, Mr Bruce Oliver, says the event has benefits for both the club and the community.

“We’ve see riders at the track and at the shopping centres all week,” said Mr Oliver. “ We estimate this will bring four to five million dollars into the local economy. People are excited to be here. We opened the gates yesterday and there was a rush of people to get into the facility and get their tents up.”

On Thursday evening will be the official awards night with announcements expected on the new state team members plus the location for the state championships in 2012.

Some of those hopeful of defending their titles in the 20 inch category this Sunday will be Kelly Percy (elite women) from Redlands; Joel Clark (elite men) from Sunshine Coast; Madison Janssen (junior women) from Nerang; Jack Buchhorn (junior men) from Mackay Pioneer; Erin Rook (16 girls) from Rockhampton; Morgan McPherson (15 girls) from Harbour City; Christopher Brown (14 boys) from Beenleigh and Abbie Blackburn (14 girls) from Bundaberg.

The event is free for spectators and it is supported by Queensland Department of Sport and Recreation, Bundaberg Regional Council and Redline Bicycles.
