Broken Rear Spoke Hack

Day 1 of a 3 day, 225km bike packing trip (Cotic H/T weighing in at 26kg ) & my Mate breaks 2 spokes.
The wheel was able to be trued enough to keep going, but it got me thinking on repairing a rear wheel & spokes, with no cassette tool etc.
Once home, google led me to this repair kit.

I'd be interested to see that in action.

Looks like a cool emergency fix, though I wonder how practical it would be in the current days of tubeless tyres and foam inserts though...

Aside from spoke breakage due to trail damage, I would err on the side of prevention including prior to big trips off the grid:
  • Run 32H rims always
  • Run brass nipples always
  • Don't use cheap, thin, or non-butted spokes
  • regularly check spokes for damage, and sufficient/even tension
  • regularly check rims and hub flanges for cracks
  • Drop of penetrating oil once in a while at the nipple end of each spoke and spin the wheel so it works into the threads

Simple emergency kit for the cassette side, the Eagle gears has no room for a trail side repair.
I could carry the removal tool, but be buggered carrying the 12" shifter it needs.
I bought one for the idiot mate, he breaks spokes on a regular basis, cause he rides like a dick, testing results to follow.
