Know of anywhere close by, maybe near Mirimbah or around there?

Ideally free or cheap.

I remember a few years ago a camp ground down the bottom, right near the Mirimbah store (and shuttle).

there's numerous free camp spots around Mt Stirling off Circuit Road King Saddle, and have stayed at Mirimbah camp spot as well, great location, near small creek. ride up road, or there is a short hike a bike way to go up to top as well. at mt stirling you'll be near epic trail

Pineapple flat campground is awesome, definitely recommended 4x4 to cross the creek into the site. Might be bit to far out of the way for buller tho.
