Time for another update for CORC Women.

Firstly, thank you to everyone for their kind words of support and encouragement for what we are doing as the CORC Women’s Development Officers. It’s great to receive and know that we are heading in the right direction. For those disciplines that we haven’t covered yet, such as downhill and 4X, hopefully you’ll be a little more patient with us and let us know what you want as these aren’t our forte.

There will be a lot to cover in this update, so please bear with us.

Anne is going to step back a bit for the month of August to focus on her training and racing; whereas Kris is panicking about there being less than 73 days to go before the World Solo 24hr race, being held at the same time as the Scott 24hr in October. For the month of August, the social rides will still go ahead, however we won’t be leading them most of the time.

Skills/ social rides

On Saturday 31 July, the regular beginner/intermediate ride will go ahead at 11am from the Stromlo pavilion.

Sunday 1 August, 10am from the Stromlo pavilion - the 'The great big 'get-back-on-your-bike-and-ride' ride' - a slow paced ride for people who need a kick start to get back into riding (see the website for more info), tell your friends who have been a bit inactive, or come along yourself if you want to meet some new faces.

Sunday 1 August, 12pm from the Stromlo pavilion (note the date change from 8 August) - The 'are-you-curious-about-racing-but-were-too-afraid-to-ask' ride. Race skills to help you in your first race - what to expect and hopefully we can help you overcome some of your anxieties (**this will only go ahead if we get the numbers - email us by Wednesday 28 August if you plan to come** or if you can help out with instruction. Details will be confirmed on Friday 30 August).

Adair Ferguson and Bev Andersen-Trantor will also be leading a few rides for us. Those that were fortunate enough to have been on a recent ride with these two awesome women will appreciate the skills they have and the willingness they have to impart this knowledge. We’ll keep you informed of these dates too.

Finally, Wednesday night rides are always happening. Meet at the Deek’s Forest carpark at 7:30pm for a ride up the mountain and back down along Skyline. All levels catered for here, just make sure your lights are fully charged!

We have found that some women avoid the social rides as they tend to underestimate their ability. We aim to provide social rides at all levels (no demand from the elites as yet). Check out the website to help you find the right ride. Here is a guide to our http://new.corc.asn.au/women/?IntCatId=20&IntContId=2513&IntContContId=2251

Contact us if you are unsure about your ability. Feel free to join a ride below your ability level or to volunteer to lead one!

Leading rides - we have put together a simple guide to leading a CORC women's ride. It is really easy. Check out the website for more details http://new.corc.asn.au/women/?IntCatId=20&IntContId=2514&IntContContId=2251

Skills courses

We have recently added two skills courses to the CORC website and without any advertising, places are already filling.

Advanced Skills Day

Sunday 22 August from 8:30am to 3:30pm. The advanced skills day is designed for riders who are seeking to move their XC skills up another level. Primarily focusing on the needs of women high intermediate to advanced level of XC country rider and increasing their skills in the technical aspects of XC riding, our male counterparts will certainly be welcome and catered for as well.

Two 24hr racing skills courses for beginners/intermediates

We have noticed that the number of women participating in the Scott 24hr hour has been in decline over the last few years. It seems that the Scott 24hr has developed a reputation as being a 'hard man's race'. We disagreed, so we wanted to do something about it. We have got together with two local providers (Michael Hanslip coaching and Cycle education) to develop some courses to introduce you to 24hr racing and give you some skills and insights into the World's biggest 24hr mountain biking event.

The courses are quite different, so have a look decide which one is for you and get your (girl) friends involved as well. This may be what they need to get them primed to enter an all girls team in the Scott 24hr (these courses also cater for boys, but we will let them sort themselves out).

Check out the CORC website for details.

Scott 24hr stories

As you can see, we are doing a big push on women's participation at the Scott 24hr this year. We want your stories and photos from previous women's teams (or first timers) on your race experiences (or preparation) for Scott 24hr newsletters and the website

Thanks Kris, for the update :)

As a suggestion, you may want to post your social rides here so the Sydney girls can come along. I often go down to Canberra for a ride.

Awesome job.
