Coffs Downhill staged round 4 of it’s series on Sunday 22nd February under blazing sun and clear skies. The weather had been an issue leading up to the event because of the truckloads of water running down the hill from the 56573 inches of rain our area has had. The track had changed, rut city. The road had turned into more of a waterslide in spots. Have you ever witnessed a car driving up a water slide? No? Well, you would’ve been impressed at the skills of our drivers tackling the gnarliest challenge of the weekend – Shuttling! Thanks to our drivers and the vehicle providers who took the challenge and performed fantastically, much appreciated!
Some parts of the track were bog holes. Distant laughter could be heard as a one handed fairy was spotted on Saturday morning transferring mud from the track surface to the fringes. Word got out later in the day that the track was prime and would be race-on-able come Sunday………Game time.
Overnight rain put a nice tacky surface down and practice runs were underway on Sunday morning. Rego went great, shuttles were great, plenty of young riders showed up and went home with big smiles. We were very proud to host Team Tomac, the Australian Junior Team. Four riders arrived and showed some of our young (………and old) riders what a lot of skill, practice and commitment can do for a downhill rider. Thanks for coming guys, great to have you!
By the time we were ready to race we had entered a record number of entries: 29! Not bad at all. We had several vehicles running so the shuttles went quite well.
The junior / hard tail / star category was red hot. 10 riders pulled the goggles on and left dust trails as far as you could see with some hot times registered. Brendan Beckaz was the eventual winner followed by Laurie Poole and Travis Smith in third. I’m enjoying watching these times come down each race so keep up the good work guys. Here are the results……..
1 - Brendan Beckaz 4.47.00
2 - Laurie Poole 4.49.22
3 - Travis Smith 5.18.88
4 - James Price 5.34.70
5 - Joel Anderson 5.44.12
6 - Jake Bromley 5.45.35
7 - Harry Lindsay 5.54.00
8 - Cameron Murdoch 6.38.47
9 - Nathan Hardaker 6.48.59
10 - Josh Neal 7.02.58

The open category was more than interesting. Team Tomac had agreed that they would not accept the podium trophies if they happened to beat any of our regular’s. Our local’s did their best to overcome Team Tomac’s speed but they eat a different breakfast to us and they bolted.
Team Tomac’s results………
1 - Darcy Murrell 3.44.83
2 - Rhys Willemse 3.49.70
3 - Tamryn Murrell 3.56.15
4 - Josh Dickinson 4.12.64

The final results for the regulars saw “The Grand Father” of Coffs Downhill claim two wins in a row. Second place was Elvis Allamby and third was Dave Marshall. Each race we’ve done the track has had some changes so the times vary each day out. Some things don’t change though and the rest of the filed was hotly contested for the minor places again. Good to see the QLD boys joined us and had fun, some of you call this venue your local and you are welcome to roll it anytime.
1 - Troy Bromley 4.10.91
2 - Elvis Allamby 4.12.06
3 - Dave Marshall 4.14.54
4 - Ian Copson 4.21.38
5 - Jordan Collon 4.27.91
6 - Hayden Elks 4.31.60
7 - Trent Blutcher 4.34.28
8 - Glenn Poole 4.34.53
9 - Blake Shepherd 4.41.47
10 - Shane Cresser 4.48.44
11 - Sam Horspool 4.53.17
12 - Dug Black 4.54.22
13 - Stewart Robson 4.55.50
14 - Craig Shepherd 6.31.83
15 - Tom Patterson DNF (torn heart string)

Well done to everybody, we all had a blast and the event went great. Thanks to our shuttle vehicle suppliers, our drivers, our BBQ chef, our junior rider’s parents and spectators. A big thanks to Al and the Ventoux Cycles crew (located in Park Beach Rd Coffs Harbour, call them on 6651 3355 for a hot deal on any DH or XC related topic and you will go onto their “tops customer” list), thanks to T-Roy for the trailer (what a fine beast it is) and thanks to the riders.
Sunday 8th March (this Sunday) is a build day. Come along with some tools and help maintain the Mt Coramba track.
Our next race is in April so stay tuned for event details.
