Consuming alcohol as a passenger in a vehicle

I was always under the assumption that any form of open alcohol in a car was illegal.

The passenger seat of your car is considered to be a public space. Just because you have paid for your car and rego doesnt mean where ever you drive becomes private property or a liscenced venue. I was explained this first hand from a fun stopper when i was young as he searched our car for open alcohol. In QLD
