ok, so reversing out of my driveway this morning (about 11) to drop my brother off at the bluegum to pick up his car, i thought it was a bit odd that a police car was blocking the road. Doing a detour we pass the other side of the roadblock, and see amblunaces and more police cars. Shit i thought, must be bad.
North Turramurra doesnt get too much action....
well, its 8pm now, and the cops are still there. and an ambulance. road blocked.
I got told when my mum got home that there has been a guy holding hostages, threatening with knifes and swords.... fucked up.

I love a bit of violence from a mental deranged person, and the typical police response (in Vic anyway) of blasting the sucker away. Guess it saves on mental hospitals.

You fellas in the plush North Shore just have to get used to such things. In my street (sunny Lakemba) - two doors up a child was murdered, next door there was full blown gang warfare between the Ethopians and Lebanese over stolen cars.

i wrote some long stuff about SOG, and why they are still resolving the situation with a tactical entry, but it got lost when i accidently clicked back on my mouse (fucking 9 button mouse).

basically, the idea of the SOG is to resolve dangerous situations with the utmost respect for the preservation of life; including that of the suspect in question.

while it may be feasible to prepare a tactical entry, it still leaves an opportunity for the HTs to kill a hostage from the time the flashbang is thrown to when the SOG team is able to disable the HT.

The bang and bullets approach seen in the movies is far from realistic. at most times, the SOG wont even fire their weapon, opting for a non lethal means of resolution.

as for similar situations. some drugged up crazy man and his girl friend took a person hostage in cambridge (tassie) a couple of months ago. they apparently had guns, explosives and knives, as well as a large quantity of methamphetamines.
during the seige, which lasted 3.5 days, the tassie SOG team only approached the house 1 time, and that was to escort the suspects after they'd surrendered. the rest of the time, the SOG remained out of sight and out of range.

yes, i would like to become a member of the SOG, but i plan to finish uni before joining the police force...

Not realy, many diseases are contracted from animals, social conditions, enrionmental conditions, and completely random stuff like raditation (ie: cancer). The one way to get rid of a disease would be to kill every living organism on earth to prevent anyone from ever contracting anything. But thats hardly practical.
