Is what you trying to avoid the shoe rub on the side of the crank?
If it is, the bare metal triangle on the SLX's is there to prefent shoe rub, as it's already bare metal = no paint to rub away. Or something along those lines. I've been running SLX's since about october last year and i have no signs what so ever of shoe rub.

they're pretty good if they're put on right.
from memory though, i think they should be less than $15 at your LBS

I got some of those ebay ones when I bought shiny new XT cranks. They do work, but they seem to be cracking and peeling at the edges after 2000km or so, so I have to cut the crappy bits off with a Stanley knife to prevent further peelage.
